As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols, kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—

My powerful hand grabbed hold of kingdoms whose people worship statues of gods. They had more gods than Jerusalem and Samaria did.

As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,

Yes, we have finished off many a kingdom whose gods were greater than those in Jerusalem and Samaria.

I overpowered kingdoms ruled by idols, whose carved images were more impressive than Jerusalem’s or Samaria’s.

As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose engraved images exceeded those of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

They spoke against the God of Jerusalem like they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth, which were made by human hands.

My hand has reached out, as if into a nest, to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered the whole earth. No wing fluttered; no beak opened or chirped.

Did the gods of the nations that my predecessors destroyed rescue them— nations such as Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the Edenites in Telassar?Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, or Ivvah?’”

Has any of the gods of the nations ever rescued his land from the power of the king of Assyria?Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my power?Who among all the gods of the lands has rescued his land from my power? So will the LORD rescue Jerusalem from my power?’”

LORD, it is true that the kings of Assyria have devastated the nations and their lands.They have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but made by human hands— wood and stone. So they have destroyed them.Now, LORD our God, please save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God— you alone.

Didn’t Hezekiah himself remove his high places and his altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem,“ You must worship before one altar, and you must burn incense on it”?“‘ Don’t you know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have any of the national gods of the lands been able to rescue their land from my power?Who among all the gods of these nations that my predecessors completely destroyed was able to rescue his people from my power, that your God should be able to deliver you from my power?So now, don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, and don’t let him mislead you like this. Don’t believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to rescue his people from my power or the power of my predecessors. How much less will your God rescue you from my power!’”His servants said more against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah.
