上帝曰、昔我得以色列族、如曠野遇葡萄、視爾列祖、如初熟之無花果、然彼往巴力比耳、崇拜可惡之物、我於是痛絕之、與所崇之物無異、

主曰、昔我得以色列族、如葡萄在曠野、視爾列祖、如在無花果樹初熟之果、然彼就巴力毘珥、專心崇拜可恥之物、遂為可憎、與所崇之物無異、

“ When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert; when I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the early fruit on the fig tree. But when they came to Baal Peor, they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol and became as vile as the thing they loved.

The Lord says,“ When I first found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert. When I saw your people of long ago, it was like seeing the early fruit on a fig tree. But then they went to Baal Peor. There they gave themselves to that shameful god named Baal. They became as evil as the god they loved.

Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved.

The Lord says,“ O Israel, when I first found you, it was like finding fresh grapes in the desert. When I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the first ripe figs of the season. But then they deserted me for Baal peor, giving themselves to that shameful idol. Soon they became vile, as vile as the god they worshiped.

“ I will not punish your daughters when they commit harlotry, Nor your brides when they commit adultery; For the men themselves go apart with harlots, And offer sacrifices with a ritual harlot. Therefore people who do not understand will be trampled.

For according to the number of your cities were your gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you have set up altars to that shameful thing, altars to burn incense to Baal.

Woe is me! For I am like those who gather summer fruits, Like those who glean vintage grapes; There is no cluster to eat Of the first-ripe fruit which my soul desires.

“ Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ I remember you, The kindness of your youth, The love of your betrothal, When you went after Me in the wilderness, In a land not sown.Israel was holiness to the Lord, The firstfruits of His increase. All that devour him will offend; Disaster will come upon them,” says the Lord.’”

But they rebelled against Me and would not obey Me. They did not all cast away the abominations which were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said,‘ I will pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.’

They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor, And ate sacrifices made to the dead.Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, And the plague broke out among them.

I will give her her vineyards from there, And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope; She shall sing there, As in the days of her youth, As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.

Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel.Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Take all the leaders of the people and hang the offenders before the Lord, out in the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.”So Moses said to the judges of Israel,“ Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor.”And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand;and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel.And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:“ Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal.Therefore say,‘ Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace;and it shall be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”Now the name of the Israelite who was killed, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites.And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a father’s house in Midian.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:“ Harass the Midianites, and attack them;for they harassed you with their schemes by which they seduced you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a leader of Midian, their sister, who was killed in the day of the plague because of Peor.”

Your eyes have seen what the Lord did at Baal Peor; for the Lord your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal of Peor.

Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.The place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down there.

Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, Proclaim and announce the freewill offerings; For this you love, You children of Israel!” Says the Lord GOD.

“ He found him in a desert land And in the wasteland, a howling wilderness; He encircled him, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye.

And the glorious beauty is a fading flower Which is at the head of the verdant valley, Like the first fruit before the summer, Which an observer sees; He eats it up while it is still in his hand.

And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.

Thus says the Lord:“ The people who survived the sword Found grace in the wilderness— Israel, when I went to give him rest.”

And you shall have the tassel, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them, and that you may not follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined,

They sacrificed to demons, not to God, To gods they did not know, To new gods, new arrivals That your fathers did not fear.

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying,“ Let Baal plead against him, because he has torn down his altar.”

“ When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.

What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?

‘ You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

So I gave them over to their own stubborn heart, To walk in their own counsels.
