I know what you are like, O Ephraim. You cannot hide yourself from me, O Israel. You have left me as a prostitute leaves her husband; you are utterly defiled.

I know Ephraim all too well; the evil of Israel is not hidden from me. For you have engaged in prostitution, O Ephraim; Israel has defiled itself.

“ I have only chosen you of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins.”

Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have plotted evil against you, saying,

For I know how many your offenses, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn away the needy in the courts.

For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty- five years Ephraim shall be broken in pieces, so that it shall not be a people.The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.’”

When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling. He exalted himself in Israel, but when he became guilty in Baal, he died.

Moreover Yahweh will raise up a king for himself over Israel, who will cut off the house of Jeroboam. This is the day! What? Even now.For Yahweh will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and he will root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their Asherah poles, provoking Yahweh to anger.He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned, and with which he has made Israel to sin.”

Yahweh will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah, even the king of Assyria.

“ Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Judah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.

Majesty belongs to the firstborn of his herd. His horns are the horns of the wild ox. With them he will push all the peoples to the ends of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim. They are the thousands of Manasseh.”

His father refused, and said,“ I know, my son, I know. He also will become a people, and he also will be great. However, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his offspring will become a multitude of nations.”He blessed them that day, saying,“ Israel will bless in you, saying,‘ God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh’” He set Ephraim before Manasseh.

“ I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot.

Jeroboam said in his heart,“ Now the kingdom will return to David’s house.If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in Yahweh’s house at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to them,“ It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and behold your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.This thing became a sin; for the people went even as far as Dan to worship before the one there.He made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar. He did so in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made, and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up to the altar, to burn incense.

“ When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, Then Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to king Jareb: but he is not able to heal you, neither will he cure you of your wound.

Ephraim feeds on wind, and chases the east wind. He continually multiplies lies and desolation. They make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt.

“ Oholah played the prostitute when she was mine. She doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbors,who were clothed with blue, governors and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses.She gave herself as a prostitute to them, all of them the choicest men of Assyria. She defiled herself with the idols of whoever she lusted after.She hasn’t left her prostitution since leaving Egypt; for in her youth they lay with her. They caressed her youthful nipples; and they poured out their prostitution on her.“ Therefore I delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, on whom she doted.These uncovered her nakedness. They took her sons and her daughters; and they killed her with the sword. She became a byword among women; for they executed judgments on her.“ Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her lusting than she, and in her prostitution which was more depraved than the prostitution of her sister.She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and rulers, her neighbors, clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding on horses, all of them desirable young men.I saw that she was defiled. They both went the same way.“ She increased her prostitution; for she saw men portrayed on the wall, the images of the Chaldeans portrayed with red,dressed with belts on their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them looking like princes, after the likeness of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their birth.As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them into Chaldea.The Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their prostitution. She was polluted with them, and her soul was alienated from them.So she uncovered her prostitution and uncovered her nakedness. Then my soul was alienated from her, just like my soul was alienated from her sister.Yet she multiplied her prostitution, remembering the days of her youth, in which she had played the prostitute in the land of Egypt.She lusted after their lovers, whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.Thus you called to memory the lewdness of your youth, in the caressing of your nipples by the Egyptians because of your youthful breasts.

Ephraim is oppressed, he is crushed in judgment; Because he is intent in his pursuit of idols.

Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning, they became for him altars for sinning.

There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

Ephraim will become a desolation in the day of rebuke. Among the tribes of Israel, I have made known that which will surely be.

Ephraim is joined to idols. Leave him alone!Their drink has become sour. They play the prostitute continually. Her rulers dearly love their shameful way.
