My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.“ Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.

My people are destroyed because they do not know me.“ You priests have refused to obey me. So I will refuse to accept you as my priests. You have not paid any attention to my law. So I will not let your children be my priests.

My people are being destroyed because they don’t know me. Since you priests refuse to know me, I refuse to recognize you as my priests. Since you have forgotten the laws of your God, I will forget to bless your children.

Therefore my people go into exile for lack of knowledge; their honored men go hungry, and their multitude is parched with thirst.

Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.

Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land;

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.For God, who said,“ Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof,therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices.For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the Rock of your refuge; therefore, though you plant pleasant plants and sow the vine-branch of a stranger,

The priests did not say,‘ Where is the Lord?’ Those who handle the law did not know me; the shepherds transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit.

but when they had grazed, they became full, they were filled, and their heart was lifted up; therefore they forgot me.

For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities; so I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour her strongholds.

For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.But you have turned aside from the way. You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts,and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you do not keep my ways but show partiality in your instruction.”

For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest and without law,

On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them.Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli.

Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the rules of the Lord.“ How can you say,‘ We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us’? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie.The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them?

The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s crib, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.”

And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of two calves; and they made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only.Judah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced.And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

“ And now, O priests, this command is for you.If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honor to my name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart.Behold, I will rebuke your offspring, and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your offerings, and you shall be taken away with it.

My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words.

“‘ This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;

Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands, they would be regarded as a strange thing.

My people inquire of a piece of wood, and their walking staff gives them oracles. For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have left their God to play the whore.

Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel.Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares:‘ I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the Lord declares:‘ Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house.Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house forever.The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants of your house shall die by the sword of men.And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day.And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever.And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say,“ Please put me in one of the priests’ places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’”

Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. They did not know the Lord.

He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said,“ Surely not!”But he looked directly at them and said,“ What then is this that is written:“‘ The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

When its boughs are dry, they are broken; women come and make a fire of them. For this is a people without discernment; therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them; he who formed them will show them no favor.

His watchmen are blind; they are all without knowledge; they are all silent dogs; they cannot bark, dreaming, lying down, loving to slumber.The dogs have a mighty appetite; they never have enough. But they are shepherds who have no understanding; they have all turned to their own way, each to his own gain, one and all.“ Come,” they say,“ let me get wine; let us fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow will be like this day, great beyond measure.”

And I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals when she burned offerings to them and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry, and went after her lovers and forgot me, declares the Lord.

And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others.

My people— infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths.

But if they do not listen, they perish by the sword and die without knowledge.

Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law.

O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent.Then I said,“ These are only the poor; they have no sense; for they do not know the way of the Lord, the justice of their God.

Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

“ For my people are foolish; they know me not; they are stupid children; they have no understanding. They are‘ wise’— in doing evil! But how to do good they know not.”

In one month I destroyed the three shepherds. But I became impatient with them, and they also detested me.So I said,“ I will not be your shepherd. What is to die, let it die. What is to be destroyed, let it be destroyed. And let those who are left devour the flesh of one another.”

Then the Lord said to me,“ Take once more the equipment of a foolish shepherd.For behold, I am raising up in the land a shepherd who does not care for those being destroyed, or seek the young or heal the maimed or nourish the healthy, but devours the flesh of the fat ones, tearing off even their hoofs.“ Woe to my worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May the sword strike his arm and his right eye! Let his arm be wholly withered, his right eye utterly blinded!”

They said to him,“ He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures:“‘ The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.

“ Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes, but see not, who have ears, but hear not.

Set the trumpet to your lips! One like a vulture is over the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant and rebelled against my law.

He answered them,“ And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?For God commanded,‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’But you say,‘ If anyone tells his father or his mother,“ What you would have gained from me is given to God,”he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.

“ Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you survivors of the nations! They have no knowledge who carry about their wooden idols, and keep on praying to a god that cannot save.

and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,

“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?And you say,‘ If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

These also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed by wine, they stagger with strong drink, they reel in vision, they stumble in giving judgment.
