Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount warhorses. We will never again say‘ Our gods’ to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion.”

Assyria can’t save us. We won’t trust in our war horses. Our own hands have made statues of gods. But we will never call them our gods again. We are like children whose fathers have died. But you show us your tender love.”

You have seen it, for You have looked at harm and provocation to take it into Your hand. The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan.

A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, Is God in His holy dwelling.

A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.

“ I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.

For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, So that they will no longer be mentioned by their names.

When Ephraim saw his sickness, And Judah his sore, Ephraim then went to Assyria And sent word to King Jareb. But he is unable to heal you, Or to cure you of your sore.

Ephraim, what more have I to do with idols? It is I who answer and look after you. I am like a luxuriant juniper; From Me comes your fruit.

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help And rely on horses, And trust in chariots because they are many And in horsemen because they are very strong, But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!

And you said,“ No, for we will flee on horses!” Therefore you shall flee!“ And we will ride on swift horses!” Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift.

For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey all alone; Ephraim has paid fees for lovers.

Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.

In any case, he is not to acquire many horses for himself, nor shall he make the people return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you,‘ You shall never again return that way.’

Therefore through this Jacob’s wrongdoing will be forgiven; And this will be the full price of the pardoning of his sin: When he makes all the altar stones like pulverized chalk stones; When Asherim and incense altars will not stand.

The Lord watches over strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow, But He thwarts the way of the wicked.

So Ephraim has become like a gullible dove, without sense; They call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.

Who proceed down to Egypt Without consulting Me, To take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh, And to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!

And He said to me,“ Son of man, this is the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever. And the house of Israel will not again defile My holy name, neither they nor their kings, by their prostitution and by the corpses of their kings when they die,by putting their threshold by My threshold, and their door post beside My door post, with only the wall between Me and them. And they have defiled My holy name by their abominations which they have committed. So I have consumed them in My anger.Now let them remove their prostitution and the corpses of their kings far from Me, and I will dwell among them forever.

You certainly will be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, And you will be embarrassed by the gardens which you have chosen.

At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him,“ Because you have relied on the king of Aram and have not relied on the Lord your God, for that reason the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.

Now the Egyptians are human and not God, And their horses are flesh and not spirit; So the Lord will stretch out His hand, And any helper will stumble, And one who is helped will fall. And all of them will come to an end together.

“ And it will be on that day,” declares the Lord,“ That I will eliminate your horses from among you, And destroy your chariots.I will also eliminate the cities of your land, And tear down all your fortifications.I will eliminate sorceries from your hand, And you will have no fortune tellers.I will eliminate your carved images And your memorial stones from among you, So that you will no longer bow down To the work of your hands.I will uproot your Asherim from among you, And destroy your cities.

Some praise their chariots and some their horses, But we will praise the name of the Lord, our God.They have bowed down and fallen, But we have risen and stood upright.

They will no longer defile themselves with their idols, or with their detestable things, or with any of their offenses; but I will rescue them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. And they will be My people, and I will be their God.

For from Israel comes even this! A craftsman made it, so it is not God; Assuredly, the calf of Samaria will be broken to pieces.

You shall not oppress any widow or orphan.If you oppress him at all, and if he does cry out to Me, I will assuredly hear his cry;and My anger will be kindled, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.

Do not move the ancient boundary Or go into the fields of the fatherless,For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their case against you.

On that day people will throw away to the moles and the bats Their idols of silver and their idols of gold, Which they made for themselves to worship,

I have certainly heard Ephraim grieving,‘ You have disciplined me, and I was corrected, Like an untrained calf; Bring me back that I may be restored, For You are the Lord my God.For after I turned back, I repented; And after I was instructed, I slapped my thigh; I was ashamed and also humiliated Because I bore the shame of my youth.’Is Ephraim My dear son? Is he a delightful child? Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him, I certainly still remember him; Therefore My heart yearns for him; I will certainly have mercy on him,” declares the Lord.“ Set up roadmarks for yourself, Place guideposts for yourself; Direct your mind to the highway, The way by which you went. Return, O virgin of Israel, Return to these your cities.How long will you waver, You rebellious daughter? For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth: A woman will shelter a man.”

“ And it will come about on that day,” declares the Lord of armies,“ that I will eliminate the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered; and I will also remove the prophets and the unclean spirit from the land.

Ephraim feeds on wind, And pursues the east wind continually; He multiplies lies and violence. Moreover, he makes a covenant with Assyria, And oil is brought to Egypt.

Do not trust in noblemen, In mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.

Now then, come make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to put riders on them!
