A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. (niv)

A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. (niv)

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. (niv)

You said,‘ No, we will flee on horses.’ Therefore you will flee! You said,‘ We will ride off on swift horses.’ Therefore your pursuers will be swift! (niv)

For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey wandering alone. Ephraim has sold herself to lovers. (niv)

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. (niv)

The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you,“ You are not to go back that way again.” (niv)

By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned for, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: When he makes all the altar stones to be like limestone crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing. (niv)

The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. (niv)

“ Ephraim is like a dove, easily deceived and senseless— now calling to Egypt, now turning to Assyria. (niv)

who go down to Egypt without consulting me; who look for help to Pharaoh’s protection, to Egypt’s shade for refuge. (niv)

“ You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen. (niv)

At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him:“ Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. (niv)

But the Egyptians are mere mortals and not God; their horses are flesh and not spirit. When the Lord stretches out his hand, those who help will stumble, those who are helped will fall; all will perish together. (niv)

“ In that day,” declares the Lord,“ I will destroy your horses from among you and demolish your chariots.I will destroy the cities of your land and tear down all your strongholds.I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells.I will destroy your idols and your sacred stones from among you; you will no longer bow down to the work of your hands.I will uproot from among you your Asherah poles when I demolish your cities. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. (niv)

They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding, and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God. (niv)

They are from Israel! This calf— a metalworker has made it; it is not God. It will be broken in pieces, that calf of Samaria. (niv)

“ Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless.If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless. (niv)

Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you. (niv)

In that day people will throw away to the moles and bats their idols of silver and idols of gold, which they made to worship. (niv)

“ I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:‘ You disciplined me like an unruly calf, and I have been disciplined. Restore me, and I will return, because you are the Lord my God.After I strayed, I repented; after I came to understand, I beat my breast. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’Is not Ephraim my dear son, the child in whom I delight? Though I often speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I have great compassion for him,” declares the Lord.“ Set up road signs; put up guideposts. Take note of the highway, the road that you take. Return, Virgin Israel, return to your towns.How long will you wander, unfaithful Daughter Israel? The Lord will create a new thing on earth— the woman will return to the man.” (niv)

“ On that day, I will banish the names of the idols from the land, and they will be remembered no more,” declares the Lord Almighty.“ I will remove both the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land. (niv)

Ephraim feeds on the wind; he pursues the east wind all day and multiplies lies and violence. He makes a treaty with Assyria and sends olive oil to Egypt. (niv)

Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. (niv)

“‘ Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses— if you can put riders on them! (niv)
