Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount warhorses. We will never again say‘ Our gods’ to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion.”

Assyria can’t save us. We won’t trust in our war horses. Our own hands have made statues of gods. But we will never call them our gods again. We are like children whose fathers have died. But you show us your tender love.”

But you yourself have seen trouble and grief, observing it in order to take the matter into your hands. The helpless one entrusts himself to you; you are a helper of the fatherless.

God in his holy dwelling is a father of the fatherless and a champion of widows.

The horse is a false hope for safety; it provides no escape by its great power.

“ I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.

For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth; they will no longer be remembered by their names.

When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria and sent a delegation to the great king. But he cannot cure you or heal your wound.

Ephraim, why should I have anything more to do with idols? It is I who answer and watch over him. I am like a flourishing pine tree; your fruit comes from me.

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and who depend on horses! They trust in the abundance of chariots and in the large number of horsemen. They do not look to the Holy One of Israel, and they do not seek the LORD.

You say,“ No! We will escape on horses”— therefore you will escape!— and,“ We will ride on fast horses”— but those who pursue you will be faster.

For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey going off on its own. Ephraim has paid for love.

I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.

However, he must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire many horses, for the LORD has told you,‘ You are never to go back that way again.’

Therefore Jacob’s iniquity will be atoned for in this way, and the result of the removal of his sin will be this: when he makes all the altar stones like crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.

The LORD protects resident aliens and helps the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove; they call to Egypt, and they go to Assyria.

Without asking my advice they set out to go down to Egypt in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection and take refuge in Egypt’s shadow.

He said to me,“ Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet, where I will dwell among the Israelites forever. The house of Israel and their kings will no longer defile my holy name by their religious prostitution and by the corpses of their kings at their high places.Whenever they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they were defiling my holy name by the detestable acts they committed. So I destroyed them in my anger.Now let them remove their prostitution and the corpses of their kings far from me, and I will dwell among them forever.

Indeed, they will be ashamed of the sacred trees you desired, and you will be embarrassed because of the garden shrines you have chosen.

At that time, the seer Hanani came to King Asa of Judah and said to him,“ Because you depended on the king of Aram and have not depended on the LORD your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from you.

Egyptians are men, not God; their horses are flesh, not spirit. When the LORD raises his hand to strike, the helper will stumble and the one who is helped will fall; both will perish together.

In that day— this is the LORD’s declaration— I will remove your horses from you and wreck your chariots.I will remove the cities of your land and tear down all your fortresses.I will remove sorceries from your hands, and you will not have any more fortune-tellers.I will remove your carved images and sacred pillars from you so that you will no longer worship the work of your hands.I will pull up the Asherah poles from among you and demolish your cities.

Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses, but we take pride in the name of the LORD our God.They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand firm.

They will not defile themselves anymore with their idols, their abhorrent things, and all their transgressions. I will save them from all their apostasies by which they sinned, and I will cleanse them. Then they will be my people, and I will be their God.

For this thing is from Israel— a craftsman made it, and it is not God. The calf of Samaria will be smashed to bits!

“ You must not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.If you do mistreat them, they will no doubt cry to me, and I will certainly hear their cry.My anger will burn, and I will kill you with the sword; then your wives will be widows and your children fatherless.

Don’t move an ancient boundary marker, and don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless,for their Redeemer is strong, and he will champion their cause against you.

On that day people will throw their worthless idols of silver and gold, which they made to worship, to the moles and the bats.

I have surely heard Ephraim moaning,“ You disciplined me, and I have been disciplined like an untrained calf. Take me back, so that I can return, for you, LORD, are my God.After my return, I felt regret; After I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.”Isn’t Ephraim a precious son to me, a delightful child? Whenever I speak against him, I certainly still think about him. Therefore, my inner being yearns for him; I will truly have compassion on him. This is the LORD’s declaration.Set up road markers for yourself; establish signposts! Keep the highway in mind, the way you have traveled. Return, Virgin Israel! Return to these cities of yours.How long will you turn here and there, faithless daughter? For the LORD creates something new in the land— a female will shelter a man.

On that day”— this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies—“ I will remove the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. I will banish the prophets and the unclean spirit from the land.

Ephraim chases the wind and pursues the east wind. He continually multiplies lies and violence. He makes a covenant with Assyria, and olive oil is carried to Egypt.

Do not trust in nobles, in a son of man, who cannot save.

“ Now make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria. I’ll give you two thousand horses if you’re able to supply riders for them!
