It is to be under siege; you are to besiege it. This is a sign for the house of Israel.“ Also for your part lie on your left side and place the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. For the number of days you lie on your side you will bear their iniquity.I have determined that the number of the years of their iniquity are to be the number of days for you– 390 days. So bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.

  • 1 Kings 18 21-1 Kings 18 40
Elijah approached all the people and said,“ How long are you going to be paralyzed by indecision? If the LORD is the true God, then follow him, but if Baal is, follow him!” But the people did not say a word.Elijah said to them:“ I am the only prophet of the LORD who is left, but there are 450 prophets of Baal.Let them bring us two bulls. Let them choose one of the bulls for themselves, cut it up into pieces, and place it on the wood. But they must not set it on fire. I will do the same to the other bull and place it on the wood. But I will not set it on fire. Then you will invoke the name of your god, and I will invoke the name of the LORD. The god who responds with fire will demonstrate that he is the true God.” All the people responded,“ This will be a fair test.”Elijah told the prophets of Baal,“ Choose one of the bulls for yourselves and go first, for you are the majority. Invoke the name of your god, but do not light a fire.”So they took a bull, as he had suggested, and prepared it. They invoked the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying,“ Baal, answer us.” But there was no sound and no answer. They jumped around on the altar they had made.At noon Elijah mocked them,“ Yell louder! After all, he is a god; he may be deep in thought, or perhaps he stepped out for a moment or has taken a trip. Perhaps he is sleeping and needs to be awakened.”So they yelled louder and, in accordance with their prescribed ritual, mutilated themselves with swords and spears until their bodies were covered with blood.Throughout the afternoon they were in an ecstatic frenzy, but there was no sound, no answer, and no response.Elijah then told all the people,“ Approach me.” So all the people approached him. He repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down. Then Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes that descended from Jacob, to whom the LORD had said,“ Israel will be your new name.”With the stones he constructed an altar for the LORD. Around the altar he made a trench large enough to contain two seahs of seed.He arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and placed it on the wood. Then he said,“ Fill four water jars and pour the water on the offering and the wood.” When they had done so, he said,“ Do it again.” So they did it again. Then he said,“ Do it a third time.” So they did it a third time. The water flowed down all sides of the altar and filled the trench. When it was time for the evening offering, Elijah the prophet approached the altar and prayed:“ O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, prove today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are the true God and that you are winning back their allegiance.”Then fire from the LORD fell from the sky. It consumed the offering, the wood, the stones, and the dirt, and licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said,“ The LORD is the true God! The LORD is the true God!”Elijah told them,“ Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let even one of them escape!” So they seized them, and Elijah led them down to the Kishon Valley and executed them there.

The word of the LORD came to me:“ Son of man, of all the woody branches among the trees of the forest, what happens to the wood of the vine? Can wood be taken from it to make anything useful? Or can anyone make a peg from it to hang things on?No! It is thrown in the fire for fuel; when the fire has burned up both ends of it and it is charred in the middle, will it be useful for anything?Indeed! If it was not made into anything useful when it was whole, how much less can it be made into anything when the fire has burned it up and it is charred?“ Therefore, this is what the sovereign LORD says: Like the wood of the vine is among the trees of the forest which I have provided as fuel for the fire– so I will provide the residents of Jerusalem as fuel.I will set my face against them– although they have escaped from the fire, the fire will still consume them! Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.I will make the land desolate because they have acted unfaithfully, declares the sovereign LORD.”
  • Jeremiah 13:1-14
The LORD said to me,“ Go and buy some linen shorts and put them on. Do not put them in water.”So I bought the shorts as the LORD had told me to do and put them on.Then the LORD spoke to me again and said,“ Take the shorts that you bought and are wearing and go at once to Perath. Bury the shorts there in a crack in the rocks.”So I went and buried them at Perath as the LORD had ordered me to do.Many days later the LORD said to me,“ Go at once to Perath and get the shorts I ordered you to bury there.”So I went to Perath and dug up the shorts from the place where I had buried them. I found that they were ruined; they were good for nothing. Then the LORD said to me,“ I, the LORD, say:‘ This shows how I will ruin the highly exalted position in which Judah and Jerusalem take pride. These wicked people refuse to obey what I have said. They follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts and pay allegiance to other gods by worshiping and serving them. So they will become just like these linen shorts which are good for nothing. For,’ I say,‘ just as shorts cling tightly to a person’s body, so I bound the whole nation of Israel and the whole nation of Judah tightly to me.’ I intended for them to be my special people and to bring me fame, honor, and praise. But they would not obey me.“ So tell them,‘ The LORD, the God of Israel, says,“ Every wine jar is made to be filled with wine.”’ And they will probably say to you,‘ Do you not think we know that every wine jar is supposed to be filled with wine?’Then tell them,‘ The LORD says,“ I will soon fill all the people who live in this land with stupor. I will also fill the kings from David’s dynasty, the priests, the prophets, and the citizens of Jerusalem with stupor. And I will smash them like wine bottles against one another, children and parents alike. I will not show any pity, mercy, or compassion. Nothing will keep me from destroying them,’ says the LORD.”
  • Hosea 1:2-5

Then she conceived and gave birth to a son for him. Then the LORD said to Hosea,“ Name him‘ Jezreel,’ because in a little while I will punish the dynasty of Jehu on account of the bloodshed in the valley of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. At that time, I will destroy the military power of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.”

But you are not like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me wholeheartedly by doing only what I approve. You have sinned more than all who came before you. You went and angered me by making other gods, formed out of metal; you have completely disregarded me.So I am ready to bring disaster on the dynasty of Jeroboam. I will cut off every last male belonging to Jeroboam in Israel, including even the weak and incapacitated. I will burn up the dynasty of Jeroboam, just as one burns manure until it is completely consumed.Dogs will eat the members of your family who die in the city, and the birds of the sky will eat the ones who die in the country.”’ Indeed, the LORD has announced it!“ As for you, get up and go home. When you set foot in the city, the boy will die.All Israel will mourn him and bury him. He is the only one in Jeroboam’s family who will receive a decent burial, for he is the only one in whom the LORD God of Israel found anything good. The LORD will raise up a king over Israel who will cut off Jeroboam’s dynasty. It is ready to happen! The LORD will attack Israel, making it like a reed that sways in the water. I will sing to my love– a song to my lover about his vineyard. My love had a vineyard on a fertile hill.He built a hedge around it, removed its stones, and planted a vine. He built a tower in the middle of it, and constructed a winepress. He waited for it to produce edible grapes, but it produced sour ones instead. So now, residents of Jerusalem, people of Judah, you decide between me and my vineyard! What more can I do for my vineyard beyond what I have already done? When I waited for it to produce edible grapes, why did it produce sour ones instead? Now I will inform you what I am about to do to my vineyard: I will remove its hedge and turn it into pasture, I will break its wall and allow animals to graze there.I will make it a wasteland; no one will prune its vines or hoe its ground, and thorns and briers will grow there. I will order the clouds not to drop any rain on it.Indeed Israel is the vineyard of the LORD who commands armies, the people of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice, but look what he got– disobedience! He waited for fairness, but look what he got– cries for help!
