For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

“ We heard him say,‘ I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”

Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The woman said to him,“ I know that Messiah is coming( he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”

So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,“ You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;as he says also in another place,“ You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

Then I said,“ Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:

Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

“ Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.

“ And a Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,” declares the Lord.

“‘ And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,

and said to him,“ Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”

The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness.For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place.Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place,having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties,but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing( which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood( for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.For it is witnessed of him,“ You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness( for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath,but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him:“ The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,‘ You are a priest forever.’”This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office,but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.
