These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.

They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law.They forgot his doings, his wondrous deeds that he had shown them.

Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void or adds to it.Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring. He doesn’t say,“ To descendants”, as of many, but as of one,“ To your offspring”, which is Christ.Now I say this: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise.Then why is there the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.

There is no one to guide her among all the sons to whom she has given birth; and there is no one who takes her by the hand among all the sons who she has brought up.

but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were twisted like a deceitful bow.

“ I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.I will purge out from among you the rebels and those who disobey me. “‘ For the Lord Yahweh says:“ I will also deal with you as you have done, who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant.

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

Moses came and told the people all Yahweh’s words, and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice, and said,“ All the words which Yahweh has spoken will we do.”Moses wrote all Yahweh’s words, then rose up early in the morning and built an altar at the base of the mountain, with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.He sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of cattle to Yahweh.Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.He took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people, and they said,“ We will do all that Yahweh has said, and be obedient.”Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said,“ Look, this is the blood of the covenant, which Yahweh has made with you concerning all these words.”Then Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up.They saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was like a paved work of sapphire stone, like the skies for clearness.He didn’t lay his hand on the nobles of the children of Israel. They saw God, and ate and drank.

But he led out his own people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.He led them safely, so that they weren’t afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.He brought them to the border of his sanctuary, to this mountain, which his right hand had taken.

He brought his people out with joy, his chosen with singing.

Then men will say,“ Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,

The earth also is polluted under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, and those who dwell therein are found guilty. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.

They rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified to them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom Yahweh had commanded them that they should not do like them.They abandoned all the commandments of Yahweh their God, and made molten images for themselves, even two calves, and made an Asherah, and worshiped all the army of the sky, and served Baal.They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, to provoke him to anger.Therefore Yahweh was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight. There was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

“ Many nations will pass by this city, and they will each ask his neighbor,‘ Why has Yahweh done this to this great city?’Then they will answer,‘ Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh their God, worshiped other gods, and served them.’”

Yahweh said to Moses,“ Behold, you shall sleep with your fathers. This people will rise up and play the prostitute after the strange gods of the land where they go to be among them, and will forsake me and break my covenant which I have made with them.Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come on them; so that they will say in that day,‘ Haven’t these evils come on us because our God is not among us?’I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods.

For I, Yahweh your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you,‘ Don’t be afraid. I will help you.’

Yahweh said to Moses,“ Write these words; for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”He was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread, nor drank water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

“‘“ Now when I passed by you, and looked at you, behold, your time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over you, and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore to you, and entered into a covenant with you,” says the Lord Yahweh,“ and you became mine.

Yahweh’s anger has scattered them. He will not pay attention to them any more. They didn’t respect the persons of the priests. They didn’t favor the elders.

‘ You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself.Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine;

“ Behold, God will not cast away a blameless man, neither will he uphold the evildoers.

He took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village. When he had spat on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.

You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

They have turned away quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and have worshiped it, and have sacrificed to it, and said,‘ These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”

It shall happen that as all the good things have come on you of which Yahweh your God spoke to you, so Yahweh will bring on you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you,when you disobey the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down yourselves to them. Then Yahweh’s anger will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from off the good land which he has given to you.”

These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods. Therefore I will save you no more.Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen. Let them save you in the time of your distress!”

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them. He bore them, and carried them all the days of old.

But he lingered; and the men grabbed his hand, his wife’s hand, and his two daughters’ hands, Yahweh being merciful to him; and they took him out, and set him outside of the city.

and brought out Israel from among them; for his loving kindness endures forever;with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm; for his loving kindness endures forever:to him who divided the Red Sea apart; for his loving kindness endures forever;and made Israel to pass through the middle of it; for his loving kindness endures forever;

Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is on you, and you will be blind, not seeing the sun for a season!” Immediately a mist and darkness fell on him. He went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

Therefore even the first covenant has not been dedicated without blood.For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,saying,“ This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”

Who is this who comes up from the wilderness, leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I aroused you. There your mother conceived you. There she was in labor and bore you.

This again you do: you cover Yahweh’s altar with tears, with weeping, and with sighing, because he doesn’t regard the offering any more, neither receives it with good will at your hand.
