And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise.

And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.

Abraham was patient while he waited. Then he received what God promised him.

And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.

Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.

And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham obtained the promise.

so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and perseverance inherit the promises.

Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing.I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.”

( as it is written,“ I have made you the father of many nations”). He is our father in the presence of God whom he believed– the God who makes the dead alive and summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do.Against hope Abraham believed in hope with the result that he became the father of many nations according to the pronouncement,“ so will your descendants be.”Without being weak in faith, he considered his own body as dead( because he was about one hundred years old) and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.He did not waver in unbelief about the promise of God but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God.He was fully convinced that what God promised he was also able to do.So indeed it was credited to Abraham as righteousness.But the statement it was credited to him was not written only for Abraham’s sake,but also for our sake, to whom it will be credited, those who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.He was given over because of our transgressions and was raised for the sake of our justification.

But Abram said,“ O sovereign LORD, what will you give me since I continue to be childless, and my heir is Eliezer of Damascus?”Abram added,“ Since you have not given me a descendant, then look, one born in my house will be my heir!”But look, the word of the LORD came to him:“ This man will not be your heir, but instead a son who comes from your own body will be your heir.”The LORD took him outside and said,“ Gaze into the sky and count the stars– if you are able to count them!” Then he said to him,“ So will your descendants be.”Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD considered his response of faith as proof of genuine loyalty.

The LORD responded:“ Write down this message! Record it legibly on tablets, so the one who announces it may read it easily.For the message is a witness to what is decreed; it gives reliable testimony about how matters will turn out. Even if the message is not fulfilled right away, wait patiently; for it will certainly come to pass– it will not arrive late.

So Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him.Abraham named his son– whom Sarah bore to him– Isaac.When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded him to do.( Now Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.)Sarah said,“ God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”She went on to say,“ Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!”

The Israelites, however, were fruitful, increased greatly, multiplied, and became extremely strong, so that the land was filled with them.

I will bless her and will give you a son through her. I will bless her and she will become a mother of nations. Kings of countries will come from her!”Then Abraham bowed down with his face to the ground and laughed as he said to himself,“ Can a son be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”
