人本来指着比自己更大的起誓；对他们，所起的誓就是了结一切争执的确据；为此，神想要对那些继承应许的人格外表明他的计划是不能更改的，就用所起的誓来保证。藉着这两件不能更改的事——在这些事上，神不可能说谎——使我们这些逃往避难所、抓住那摆在前面盼望的人，可以得到极大的鼓励。

就是向我们的先祖亚伯拉罕所起的誓，

我指着自己起誓——从我的口凭公义发出的话语，绝不返回——‘万膝必向我跪下，万口必向我起誓。’

就是他与亚伯拉罕所立的约，向以撒所起的誓；又把这约给雅各立为律例，给以色列立为永远的约；
