We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

We don’t want you to slow down. Instead, be like those who have faith and are patient. They will receive what God promised.

Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.

For you need endurance in order to do God’s will and so receive what is promised.

On this topic we have much to say and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing.

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of one who lacks wisdom.I saw that thorns had grown up all over it, the ground was covered with weeds, and its stone wall was broken down.When I saw this, I gave careful consideration to it; I received instruction from what I saw:“ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to relax,and your poverty will come like a bandit, and your need like an armed robber.”

The one who is slack in his work is a brother to one who destroys.

If anyone is meant for captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed by the sword, then by the sword he must be killed. This requires steadfast endurance and faith from the saints.

Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to serve those who will inherit salvation?

If you do not know, O most beautiful of women, simply follow the tracks of my flock, and pasture your little lambs beside the tents of the shepherds.

‘ I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living!”

Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin.

As a result we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions you are enduring.

But his master answered,‘ Evil and lazy slave! So you knew that I harvest where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter?

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, and he went out without understanding where he was going.By faith he lived as a foreigner in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow heirs of the same promise.For he was looking forward to the city with firm foundations, whose architect and builder is God.By faith, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was too old, he received the ability to procreate, because he regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy.So in fact children were fathered by one man– and this one as good as dead– like the number of stars in the sky and like the innumerable grains of sand on the seashore.These all died in faith without receiving the things promised, but they saw them in the distance and welcomed them and acknowledged that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth.For those who speak in such a way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.In fact, if they had been thinking of the land that they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.But as it is, they aspire to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He had received the promises, yet he was ready to offer up his only son.

because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

The diligent person will rule, but the slothful will become a slave.

“ Now the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.

And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise.

because we recall in the presence of our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and endurance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

For in the same way the holy women who hoped in God long ago adorned themselves by being subject to their husbands,like Sarah who obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You become her children when you do what is good and have no fear in doing so.

And he is also the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham possessed when he was still uncircumcised.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us,

eternal life to those who by perseverance in good works seek glory and honor and immortality,

But even Moses revealed that the dead are raised in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live before him.”

But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with endurance.In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how we should pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings.

As an example of suffering and patience, brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord’s name.Think of how we regard as blessed those who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance and you have seen the Lord’s purpose, that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied.
