We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

We don’t want you to slow down. Instead, be like those who have faith and are patient. They will receive what God promised.

We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand.

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of one lacking sense.Thistles had come up everywhere, weeds covered the ground, and the stone wall was ruined.I saw, and took it to heart; I looked, and received instruction:a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest,and your poverty will come like a robber, and your need, like a bandit.

The one who is lazy in his work is brother to a vandal.

This is what the LORD says: Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths,“ Which is the way to what is good?” Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they protested,“ We won’t!”

If anyone is to be taken captive, into captivity he goes. If anyone is to be killed with a sword, with a sword he will be killed. This calls for endurance and faithfulness from the saints.

Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation?

If you do not know, most beautiful of women, follow the tracks of the flock, and pasture your young goats near the shepherds’ tents.

I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election, because if you do these things you will never stumble.

Therefore, we ourselves boast about you among God’s churches— about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions that you are enduring.

A slacker’s way is like a thorny hedge, but the path of the upright is a highway.

Do not lack diligence in zeal; be fervent in the Spirit; serve the Lord.

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going.By faith he stayed as a foreigner in the land of promise, living in tents as did Isaac and Jacob, coheirs of the same promise.For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.By faith even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she considered that the one who had promised was faithful.Therefore, from one man— in fact, from one as good as dead— came offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and as innumerable as the grains of sand along the seashore.These all died in faith, although they had not received the things that were promised. But they saw them from a distance, greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.Now those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.If they were thinking about where they came from, they would have had an opportunity to return.But they now desire a better place— a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He received the promises and yet he was offering his one and only son,

because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

The diligent hand will rule, but laziness will lead to forced labor.

One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.

And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham obtained the promise.

We recall, in the presence of our God and Father, your work produced by faith, your labor motivated by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also adorned themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and do not fear any intimidation.

And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.

Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us,

eternal life to those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality;

Moses even indicated in the passage about the burning bush that the dead are raised, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.He is not the God of the dead but of the living, because all are living to him.”

Now if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with patience.In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings.

Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord’s name as an example of suffering and patience.See, we count as blessed those who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about— the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

The slacker craves, yet has nothing, but the diligent is fully satisfied.
