Jesus prayed while he lived on earth. He made his appeal with sincere cries and tears. He prayed to the God who could save him from death. God answered Jesus because he truly honored God.

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples,“ Sit here while I pray.”He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.“ My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them.“ Stay here and keep watch.”Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.“ Abba, Father,” he said,“ everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping.“ Simon,” he said to Peter,“ are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,

For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

Jesus wept.

“ Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say?‘ Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven,“ I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,“ Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:“ Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.

Jesus called out with a loud voice,“ Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.Then Jesus told them,“ This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:“‘ I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”Peter replied,“ Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”“ Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered,“ this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”But Peter declared,“ Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them,“ Sit here while I go over there and pray.”He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.Then he said to them,“ My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death— that is, the devil—

Lord, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you.

He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.

I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,

But I pray to you, Lord, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.

He is to present the bull at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord. He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it there before the Lord.Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull’s blood and carry it into the tent of meeting.He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle some of it seven times before the Lord, in front of the curtain of the sanctuary.The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the Lord in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull’s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting.He shall remove all the fat from the bull of the sin offering— all the fat that is connected to the internal organs,both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys—just as the fat is removed from the ox sacrificed as a fellowship offering. Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head and legs, the internal organs and the intestines—that is, all the rest of the bull— he must take outside the camp to a place ceremonially clean, where the ashes are thrown, and burn it there in a wood fire on the ash heap.“‘ If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realize their guiltand the sin they committed becomes known, the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering and present it before the tent of meeting.

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

and take it to Aaron’s sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the flour and oil, together with all the incense, and burn this as a memorial portion on the altar, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

“ Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him,“ for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises.In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them.To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people.All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.“ He trusts in the Lord,” they say,“ let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me.My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me.Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs.Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

This is what the Lord says:“ In the time of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances,

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,

Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
