And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.

且無人得以斯職自任、必蒙天主恩召始可。亞倫即其一例。

And no one can take this honor for himself. Instead, he receives it when he is appointed by God. That is just how it was for Aaron.

And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was.

“ Have Aaron your brother brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, so they may serve me as priests.

as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the Lord, or he would become like Korah and his followers.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart, he and his descendants forever, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices before the Lord, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings in his name forever.

They confronted King Uzziah and said,“ It is not right for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord. That is for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful; and you will not be honored by the Lord God.”

Then he said to Korah and all his followers:“ In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him.

The Lord said to Aaron,“ You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood.Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister before the tent of the covenant law.They are to be responsible to you and are to perform all the duties of the tent, but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die.They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting— all the work at the tent— and no one else may come near where you are.“ You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar, so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again.

And fire came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

Then Moses said to Aaron,“ Take your censer and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord; the plague has started.”So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them.He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.

To this John replied,“ A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.

He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.

But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain. I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift. Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death.”

On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe.Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the ark of the covenant law, where I meet with you.The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites.”So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them.Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law.The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.The Lord said to Moses,“ Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.”Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.

Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.

“ Bring Aaron and his sons, their garments, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering, the two rams and the basket containing bread made without yeast,

and tomorrow put burning coals and incense in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far!”
