Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,“ Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks!

Wherefore, even as the Holy Spirit saith, To- day if ye shall hear his voice,

Wherefore( as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says,“ Today if you will hear his voice,

For he is our God; we are the people of his pasture, the sheep he owns. Today, if only you would obey him!He says,“ Do not be stubborn like they were at Meribah, like they were that day at Massah in the wilderness,where your ancestors challenged my authority, and tried my patience, even though they had seen my work.For forty years I was continually disgusted with that generation, and I said,‘ These people desire to go astray; they do not obey my commands.’So I made a vow in my anger,‘ They will never enter into the resting place I had set aside for them.’”

As it says,“ Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Pay attention and come to me! Listen, so you can live! Then I will make an unconditional covenantal promise to you, just like the reliable covenantal promises I made to David.

Listen! I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home and share a meal with him, and he with me.

So God again ordains a certain day,“ Today,” speaking through David after so long a time, as in the words quoted before,“ O, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts.”

If only my people would obey me! If only Israel would keep my commands!

My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

But exhort one another each day, as long as it is called“ Today,” that none of you may become hardened by sin’s deception.

Now because we are fellow workers, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain.For he says,“ I heard you at the acceptable time, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Look, now is the acceptable time; look, now is the day of salvation!

The doorkeeper opens the door for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

But my people did not obey me; Israel did not submit to me.

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said,“ This is my one dear Son, in whom I take great delight. Listen to him!”

Seek the LORD while he makes himself available; call to him while he is nearby!

I tell you the solemn truth, a time is coming– and is now here– when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, because there is neither work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave, the place where you will eventually go.

The LORD’s spirit spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.

The Holy Spirit is making clear that the way into the Holy Place had not yet appeared as long as the old tabernacle was standing.

Do not boast about tomorrow; for you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Come now, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.”You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes.You ought to say instead,“ If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.”

So they began to leave, unable to agree among themselves, after Paul made one last statement:“ The Holy Spirit spoke rightly to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah

David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said,‘ The Lord said to my lord,“ Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’

“ Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through David concerning Judas– who became the guide for those who arrested Jesus–
