For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm,

夫爾非至可捫火炎之山、及幽冥、昏暗、暴風、

爾所至者、非有形之山、在彼火焰靉靆、幽暗暴風、

爾所至者、非彼可捫之山、在彼有烈火、密雲、幽暗、暴風、

應知爾今所陟者、非一有形之山、其上有火焰靉靆、幽冥暴風。

You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm;

You haven’t come to a mountain that can be touched. You haven’t come to a mountain burning with fire. You haven’t come to darkness, gloom and storm.

For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest

You have not come to a physical mountain, to a place of flaming fire, darkness, gloom, and whirlwind, as the Israelites did at Mount Sinai.

For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind,

For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest,

For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm,

For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

For you have not come to something that can be touched, to a burning fire and darkness and gloom and a whirlwind

You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain blazing with fire into the heavens and enveloped in a totally black cloud.

All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram’s horn, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it they trembled and stood at a distance.

“ The LORD spoke these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly from the fire, cloud, and total darkness on the mountain; he added nothing more. He wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.All of you approached me with your tribal leaders and elders when you heard the voice from the darkness and while the mountain was blazing with fire.You said,‘ Look, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that God speaks with a person, yet he still lives.But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.For who out of all humanity has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the fire, as we have, and lived?

The appearance of the LORD’s glory to the Israelites was like a consuming fire on the mountaintop.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out,“ Abba, Father!”

For if the ministry that brought condemnation had glory, the ministry that brings righteousness overflows with even more glory.

Put boundaries for the people all around the mountain and say: Be careful that you don’t go up on the mountain or touch its base. Anyone who touches the mountain must be put to death.No hand may touch him; instead he will be stoned or shot with arrows and not live, whether animal or human. When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they may go up the mountain.”Then Moses came down from the mountain to the people and consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.He said to the people,“ Be prepared by the third day. Do not have sexual relations with women.”On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud blast from a ram’s horn, so that all the people in the camp shuddered.Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the LORD came down on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently.As the sound of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him in the thunder.The LORD came down on Mount Sinai at the top of the mountain. Then the LORD summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and he went up.The LORD directed Moses,“ Go down and warn the people not to break through to see the LORD; otherwise many of them will die.Even the priests who come near the LORD must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out in anger against them.”

For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace.
