掃羅追趕非利士人回來，有人告訴他說：「大衛在隱‧基底的曠野。」掃羅就從以色列人中挑選三千精兵，率領他們往野羊的磐石去，尋索大衛和跟隨他的人。到了路旁的羊圈，在那裏有洞，掃羅進去大解。大衛和跟隨他的人正藏在洞裏的深處。

西弗人到基比亞見掃羅，說：「大衛不是在曠野前的哈基拉山藏着嗎？」

義人死亡，無人放在心上；虔誠人被收去，無人思念。這義人被收去是免了將來的禍患；

耶洗別殺耶和華眾先知的時候，我將耶和華的一百個先知藏了，每五十人藏在一個洞裏，拿餅和水供養他們，豈沒有人將這事告訴我主嗎？

我發聲哀告耶和華，發聲懇求耶和華。我在他面前吐露我的苦情，陳說我的患難。我的靈在我裏面發昏的時候，你知道我的道路。在我行的路上，敵人為我暗設網羅。求你向我右邊觀看，因為沒有人認識我；我無處避難，也沒有人眷顧我。耶和華啊，我曾向你哀求。我說：你是我的避難所；在活人之地，你是我的福分。求你側耳聽我的呼求，因我落到極卑之地；求你救我脫離逼迫我的人，因為他們比我強盛。求你領我出離被囚之地，我好稱讚你的名。義人必環繞我，因為你是用厚恩待我。

所以你起身回家去吧！你的腳一進城，你兒子就必死了。以色列眾人必為他哀哭，將他葬埋。凡屬耶羅波安的人，惟有他得入墳墓；因為在耶羅波安的家中，只有他向耶和華－以色列的神顯出善行。

所以要看準他藏匿的地方，回來據實地告訴我，我就與你們同去。他若在猶大的境內，我必從千門萬戶中搜出他來。」

在約西亞以前沒有王像他盡心、盡性、盡力地歸向耶和華，遵行摩西的一切律法；在他以後也沒有興起一個王像他。然而，耶和華向猶大所發猛烈的怒氣仍不止息，是因瑪拿西諸事惹動他。耶和華說：「我必將猶大人從我面前趕出，如同趕出以色列人一般；我必棄掉我從前所選擇的這城－耶路撒冷和我所說立我名的殿。」約西亞其餘的事，凡他所行的都寫在猶大列王記上。約西亞年間，埃及王法老尼哥上到幼發拉底河攻擊亞述王；約西亞王去抵擋他。埃及王遇見約西亞在米吉多，就殺了他。

西弗人上到基比亞見掃羅，說：「大衛不是在我們那裏的樹林裏山寨中、曠野南邊的哈基拉山藏着嗎？

「你離開這裏往東去，藏在約旦河東邊的基立溪旁。
