斯輩不見容於世、乃穴居野處、遁跡山林、

大衛離開迦特，逃到了亞杜蘭山洞。他的哥哥們和他父親的全家聽說了，就下去到他那裡。

掃羅追擊非利士人回來的時候，有人告訴他說：「看哪，大衛在恩蓋迪的曠野。」掃羅就帶著全以色列中的三千精兵，前往野山羊磐石東邊去尋索大衛和他的部下。來到路旁的羊圈時，那裡有一個洞穴，掃羅進去解手，那時大衛和他的部下正在洞穴的深處。

西弗人來到基比亞見掃羅，說：「大衛不是躲藏在曠野對面的哈基拉山中嗎？」

義人死亡，沒有人放在心上；忠誠的人被接去，沒有人理會。義人被接去脫離禍患，

我用我的聲音向耶和華哀求，用我的聲音向耶和華懇求。我在他面前傾吐我的苦情，在他面前陳說我的患難。我的靈在我裡面虛弱時，你知道我的道路；在我所行的路上，他們為我暗設網羅。求你向我右邊觀看，沒有人理睬我，我沒有避難的地方，也沒有人顧念我的靈魂！耶和華啊，我向你哀求，說：「你是我的避難所，是我在活人之地繼業的份！」求你留心聽我的呼聲，因為我極其衰微；求你解救我脫離追逼我的人，因為他們比我強大。求你把我的靈魂從被囚之地領出來，好讓我稱頌你的名；義人將環繞我，因為你恩待我。

你們要查清他躲藏的所有地方，確定後回來見我，我就與你們一同去。如果他在那地方，我就把他從猶大的千家萬戶中搜出來。」

西弗人上到基比亞見掃羅，說：「大衛難道不是躲藏在我們這裡，在曠野南邊哈基拉山上的何列什要塞嗎？

大衛知道掃羅已經出來尋索他的性命，那時大衛在西弗曠野的何列什。
