Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.

Some were made fun of and even whipped. Some were held by chains. Some were put in prison.

So the runners passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun; but they laughed at them and mocked them.

Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.When Jeremiah entered the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days,then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said,“ Is there any word from the Lord?” And Jeremiah said,“ There is.” Then he said,“ You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!”Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah,“ What offense have I committed against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying,‘ The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?Therefore please hear now, O my Lord the king. Please, let my petition be accepted before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy.

O Lord, You induced me, and I was persuaded; You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I am in derision daily; Everyone mocks me.

Then the commander came near and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and he asked who he was and what he had done.

Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained.

Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.

Now Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said,“ Which way did the spirit from the Lord go from me to speak to you?”

You go, therefore, and read from the scroll which you have written at my instruction, the words of the Lord, in the hearing of the people in the LORD’s house on the day of fasting. And you shall also read them in the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities.

So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.Now Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon. When the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin,Ebed-Melech went out of the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying:“ My Lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon, and he is likely to die from hunger in the place where he is. For there is no more bread in the city.”Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying,“ Take from here thirty men with you, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies.”So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there old clothes and old rags, and let them down by ropes into the dungeon to Jeremiah.Then Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah,“ Please put these old clothes and rags under your armpits, under the ropes.” And Jeremiah did so.So they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Now Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken. And he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.

“ The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, so that there should be officers in the house of the Lord over every man who is demented and considers himself a prophet, that you should put him in prison and in the stocks.

For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon.

And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another.

Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him,“ Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”

and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.”

And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles—

for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven.

So when he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to keep him, intending to bring him before the people after Passover.Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church.And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were keeping the prison.Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying,“ Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands.Then the angel said to him,“ Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him,“ Put on your garment and follow me.”So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.And when Peter had come to himself, he said,“ Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.”So, when he had considered this, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying.And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer.When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her gladness she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter stood before the gate.But they said to her,“ You are beside yourself!” Yet she kept insisting that it was so. So they said,“ It is his angel.”Now Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.But motioning to them with his hand to keep silent, he declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said,“ Go, tell these things to James and to the brethren.” And he departed and went to another place.Then, as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter.But when Herod had searched for him and not found him, he examined the guards and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.

and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods.And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely.Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself.But Paul called with a loud voice, saying,“ Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.”Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.And he brought them out and said,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”So they said,“ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized.Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying,“ Let those men go.”So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying,“ The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.”But Paul said to them,“ They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.”And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans.Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city.So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,

The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain;

But after two years Porcius Festus succeeded Felix; and Felix, wanting to do the Jews a favor, left Paul bound.

As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.

So it happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said,“ Call for Samson, that he may perform for us.” So they called for Samson from the prison, and he performed for them. And they stationed him between the pillars.

The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine,

He sent a man before them— Joseph— who was sold as a slave.They hurt his feet with fetters, He was laid in irons.

Then Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said to me,‘ Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

Meanwhile the word of the Lord had come to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
