Some were made fun of and even whipped. Some were held by chains. Some were put in prison.

Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in prison, for he was enraged at him for this. And Asa mistreated some of the people at the same time.

and say,‘ This is what the king says:“ Put this man in prison, and feed him enough bread and water to survive until I return safely.” ’ ”

So the couriers passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, and as far as Zebulun, but they laughed at them with scorn and mocked them.

Then the officials were angry at Jeremiah and they beat him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for they had made it into the prison.For Jeremiah had come into the dungeon, that is, the vaulted cell; and Jeremiah stayed there many days.Now King Zedekiah sent men and took him out; and in his palace the king secretly asked him and said,“ Is there a word from the Lord?” And Jeremiah said,“ There is!” Then he said,“ You will be handed over to the king of Babylon!”Moreover, Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah,“ In what way have I sinned against you, or your servants, or this people, that you have put me in prison?And where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying,‘ The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?But now, please listen, my lord the king; please let my plea come before you and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, so that I will not die there.”Then King Zedekiah gave a command, and they placed Jeremiah in custody in the courtyard of the guardhouse, and gave him a loaf of bread daily from the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guardhouse.

but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against His people, until there was no remedy.

Lord, You persuaded me and I let myself be persuaded; You have overcome me and prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long; Everyone mocks me.

Then the commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered that he be bound with two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done.

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

for which I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned.

So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Malchijah the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guardhouse; and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. Now in the cistern there was no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.But Ebed melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, while he was in the king’s palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the cistern. Now the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin;and Ebed melech went out from the king’s palace and spoke to the king, saying,“ My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have thrown into the cistern; and he will die right where he is because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city.”Then the king commanded Ebed melech the Ethiopian, saying,“ Take thirty men from here under your authority and bring Jeremiah the prophet up from the cistern before he dies.”So Ebed melech took the men under his authority and went into the king’s palace to a place beneath the storeroom, and took from there worn out clothes and worn out rags, and let them down by ropes into the cistern to Jeremiah.Then Ebed melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah,“ Now put these worn out clothes and rags under your armpits under the ropes”; and Jeremiah did so.So they pulled Jeremiah out with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern, and Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guardhouse.

So Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was captured.

And they laid hands on them and put them in prison until the next day, for it was already evening.

“ The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to be the overseer of the house of the Lord for every insane person who prophesies, to put him in the stocks and in the iron collar.

For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon,

And the vine growers took his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.

Now he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the road, some young boys came out from the city and ridiculed him and said to him,“ Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!”

and they will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on the third day He will be raised up.”

They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.

Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—

For you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better and lasting possession.

When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, turning him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending only after the Passover to bring him before the people.So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made to God intensely by the church.On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison.And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near Peter, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him, saying,“ Get up quickly.” And his chains fell off his hands.And the angel said to him,“ Put on your belt and strap on your sandals.” And he did so. And he* said to him,“ Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”And he went out and continued to follow, and yet he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.Now when they had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened for them by itself; and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.When Peter came to himself, he said,“ Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent forth His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”And when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John, who was also called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.When he knocked at the door of the gate, a slave woman named Rhoda came to answer.When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gate.They said to her,“ You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They said,“ It is his angel.”But Peter continued knocking; and when they had opened the door, they saw him and were amazed.But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said,“ Report these things to James and the brothers.” Then he left and went to another place.Now when day came, there was no small disturbance among the soldiers as to what could have become of Peter.When Herod had searched for him and had not found him, he examined the guards and ordered that they be led away to execution. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and was spending time there.

And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

The crowd joined in an attack against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.Now about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened.When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped.But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying,“ Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!”And the jailer asked for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas;and after he brought them out, he said,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They said,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”And they spoke the word of God to him together with all who were in his house.And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and was overjoyed, since he had become a believer in God together with his whole household.Now when day came, the chief magistrates sent their officers, saying,“ Release those men.”And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying,“ The chief magistrates have sent word that you be released. So come out now and go in peace.”But Paul said to them,“ After beating us in public without due process— men who are Romans— they threw us into prison; and now they are releasing us secretly? No indeed! On the contrary, let them come in person and lead us out.”The officers reported these words to the chief magistrates. And they became fearful when they heard that they were Romans,and they came and pleaded with them, and when they had led them out, they repeatedly asked them to leave the city.They left the prison and entered the house of Lydia, and when they saw the brothers and sisters, they encouraged them and departed.

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,

The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains;

But after two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and Felix, wanting to do the Jews a favor, left Paul imprisoned.

But Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house; and he would drag away men and women and put them in prison.

It so happened when they were in high spirits, that they said,“ Call for Samson, that he may amuse us.” So they called for Samson from the prison, and he entertained them. And they made him stand between the pillars.

The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine,

He sent a man before them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.They forced his feet into shackles, He was put in irons;

Then my uncle’s son Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard in accordance with the word of the Lord and said to me,‘ Buy my field, please, that is at Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for you have the right of possession and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

Now the word of the Lord had come to Jeremiah while he was confined in the courtyard of the guardhouse, saying,
