Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.

Some were made fun of and even whipped. Some were held by chains. Some were put in prison.

and say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.

So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, even unto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them.

And the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison.When Jeremiah was come into the dungeon- house, and into the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;Then Zedekiah the king sent, and fetched him: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from Jehovah? Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

O Jehovah, thou hast persuaded me, and I was persuaded; thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am become a laughing- stock all the day, every one mocketh me.

Then the chief captain came near, and laid hold on him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and inquired who he was, and what he had done.

Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.

wherein I suffer hardship unto bonds, as a malefactor; but the word of God is not bound.

And Herod with his soldiers set him at nought, and mocked him, and arraying him in gorgeous apparel sent him back to Pilate.

Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of Jehovah from me to speak unto thee?

therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of Jehovah in the ears of the people in Jehovah’s house upon the fast- day; and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.Now when Ebed- melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon( the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin),Ebed- melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king, saying,My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.Then the king commanded Ebed- melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.So Ebed- melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence rags and worn- out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.And Ebed- melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn- out garments under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken. And it came to pass when Jerusalem was taken

And they laid hands on them, and put them in ward unto the morrow: for it was now eventide.

Jehovah hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Jehovah, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in shackles.

For he shall be delivered up unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and shamefully treated, and spit upon:

And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

And he went up from thence unto Beth- el; and as he was going up by the way, there came forth young lads out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou baldhead; go up, thou baldhead.

and shall deliver him unto the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify: and the third day he shall be raised up.

And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Then released he unto them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified.

For ye both had compassion on them that were in bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your possessions, knowing that ye have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding one.

And when he had taken him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him; intending after the Passover to bring him forth to the people.Peter therefore was kept in the prison: but prayer was made earnestly of the church unto God for him.And when Herod was about to bring him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and guards before the door kept the prison.And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shined in the cell: and he smote Peter on the side, and awoke him, saying, Rise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And he did so. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.And he went out, and followed; and he knew not that it was true which was done by the angel, but thought he saw a vision.And when they were past the first and the second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth into the city; which opened to them of its own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and straightway the angel departed from him.And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a truth, that the Lord hath sent forth his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together and were praying.And when he knocked at the door of the gate, a maid came to answer, named Rhoda.And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for joy, but ran in, and told that Peter stood before the gate.And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she confidently affirmed that it was even so. And they said, It is his angel.But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed.But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him forth out of the prison. And he said, Tell these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went to another place.Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judæa to Cæsarea, and tarried there.

And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them;and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison- house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened; and every one’s bands were loosed.And the jailor, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.And he called for lights and sprang in, and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas,and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.And they spake the word of the Lord unto him, with all that were in his house.And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, immediately.And he brought them up into his house, and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, with all his house, having believed in God.But when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.And the jailor reported the words to Paul, saying, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.And the serjeants reported these words unto the magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans;and they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city.And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beseech you to walk worthily of the calling wherewith ye were called,

The Lord grant mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus: for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain;

But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.

But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.

And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison- house; and he made sport before them. And they set him between the pillars:

And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, offering him vinegar,

He sent a man before them; Joseph was sold for a servant:His feet they hurt with fetters: He was laid in chains of iron,

So Hanamel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of Jehovah, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of Jehovah.

Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the guard, saying,
