    Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he[ was] the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou[ art] the son of a strange woman.Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

    And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name[ was] Manoah; and his wife[ was] barren, and bare not.And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou[ art] barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean[ thing]:For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance[ was] like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he[ was], neither told he me his name:But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean[ thing]: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.Then Manoah intreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband[ was] not with her.And the woman made haste, and ran, and shewed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the[ other] day.And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him,[ Art] thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I[ am].And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and[ how] shall we do unto him?And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.She may not eat of any[ thing] that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean[ thing]: all that I commanded her let her observe.And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee.And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he[ was] an angel of the LORD.

    And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days;[ there was] no open vision.And it came to pass at that time, when Eli[ was] laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim,[ that] he could not see;And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God[ was], and Samuel was laid down[ to sleep];That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here[ am] I.And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here[ am] I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here[ am] I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here[ am] I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.In that day I will perform against Eli all[ things] which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

    And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the[ son] of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.Of this man’s seed hath God according to[ his] promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not[ he]. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of[ his] feet I am not worthy to loose.Men[ and] brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled[ them] in condemning[ him].And though they found no cause of death[ in him], yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took[ him] down from the tree, and laid[ him] in a sepulchre.But God raised him from the dead:And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead,[ now] no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.Wherefore he saith also in another[ psalm], Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

    Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which[ belongeth] to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and[ there was] a valley between them.And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height[ was] six cubits and a span.And[ he had] an helmet of brass upon his head, and he[ was] armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat[ was] five thousand shekels of brass.And[ he had] greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.And the staff of his spear[ was] like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head[ weighed] six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set[ your] battle in array?[ am] not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.Now David[ was] the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name[ was] Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men[ for] an old man in the days of Saul.And the three eldest sons of Jesse went[ and] followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle[ were] Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.And David[ was] the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched[ corn], and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of[ their] thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

  • Judges 4:1-6:8
    And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead.And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host[ was] Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded,[ saying], Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me,[ then] I will not go.And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.Now Heber the Kenite,[ which was] of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which[ is] by Kedesh.And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.And Sisera gathered together all his chariots,[ even] nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that[ were] with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon.And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this[ is] the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all[ his] chariots, and all[ his] host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off[ his] chariot, and fled away on his feet.But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword;[ and] there was not a man left.Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite: for[ there was] peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle.And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and enquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.Then Jael Heber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her[ tent], behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail[ was] in his temples.So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.And the hand of the children of Israel prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I,[ even] I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing[ praise] to the LORD God of Israel.LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.The mountains melted from before the LORD,[ even] that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways.[ The inhabitants of] the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.They chose new gods; then[ was] war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?My heart[ is] toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye the LORD.Speak, ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.[ They that are delivered] from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD,[ even] the righteous acts[ toward the inhabitants] of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam.Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.Out of Ephraim[ was there] a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.And the princes of Issachar[ were] with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben[ there were] great thoughts of heart.Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben[ there were] great searchings of heart.Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his breaches.Zebulun and Naphtali[ were] a people[ that] jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field.The kings came[ and] fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength.Then were the horsehoofs broken by the means of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones.Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.He asked water,[ and] she gave[ him] milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot[ so] long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself,Have they not sped? have they[ not] divided the prey; to every man a damsel[ or] two; to Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides,[ meet] for the necks of[ them that take] the spoil?So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but[ let] them that love him[ be] as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel:[ and] because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which[ are] in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.And[ so] it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude;[ for] both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

    Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold,[ there is] a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me[ him] up, whom I shall name unto thee.And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying,[ As] the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou[ art] Saul.And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.And he said unto her, What form[ is] he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he[ is] covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it[ was] Samuel, and he stooped with[ his] face to the ground, and bowed himself.And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour,[ even] to David:Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and tomorrow[ shalt] thou and thy sons[ be] with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded[ it], and did bake unleavened bread thereof:And she brought[ it] before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
