He chose to be treated badly together with the people of God. He chose not to enjoy sin’s pleasures. They only last for a short time.

choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,

and chose to suffer with the people of God rather than to enjoy the short-lived pleasure of sin.

Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

For a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment?

Take heed, don’t regard iniquity; for you have chosen this rather than affliction.

However much she glorified herself, and grew wanton, so much give her of torment and mourning. For she says in her heart,‘ I sit a queen, and am no widow, and will in no way see mourning.’

In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you.But because you are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice, that at the revelation of his glory you also may rejoice with exceeding joy.If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed; because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil doer, or a meddler in other men’s matters.But if one of you suffers for being a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this matter.

Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction.How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved in various trials,that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.

“ Now therefore hear this, you who are given to pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart,‘ I am, and there is no one else besides me. I won’t sit as a widow, neither will I know the loss of children.’But these two things will come to you in a moment in one day, the loss of children and widowhood. They will come on you in their full measure, in the multitude of your sorceries, and the great abundance of your enchantments.

They send out their little ones like a flock. Their children dance.They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol.

I will tell my soul,“ Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”’“ But God said to him,‘ You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared— whose will they be?’

Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance;

We are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers, even as it is appropriate, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of each and every one of you toward one another abounds,so that we ourselves boast about you in the assemblies of God for your perseverance and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you endure.This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of God’s Kingdom, for which you also suffer.Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you,

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.“ Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.No soldier on duty entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he isn’t crowned unless he has competed by the rules.The farmer who labors must be the first to get a share of the crops.Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the offspring of David, according to my Good News,in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God’s word isn’t chained.Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones’ sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

But remember the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings;

My heart flutters. Horror has frightened me. The twilight that I desired has been turned into trembling for me.

You have lived in luxury on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

Therefore don’t be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but endure hardship for the Good News according to the power of God,

“ But Abraham said,‘ Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in the same way, bad things. But here he is now comforted, and you are in anguish.

persecutions, and sufferings: those things that happened to me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I endured those persecutions. The Lord delivered me out of them all.Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?Even as it is written,“ For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

The princes of the peoples are gathered together, the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God. He is greatly exalted!

They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill- treated—

and if children, then heirs: heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed toward us.

Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and fill up on my part that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the assembly,

except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions wait for me.But these things don’t count; nor do I hold my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to fully testify to the Good News of the grace of God.

There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
