“ Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, setting his nest on high to escape the clutches of ruin!

“ How terrible it will be for the Babylonians! They build their kingdom with money that they gained by cheating others. They have tried to make the kingdom as secure as possible. After all, they did not want to be destroyed.

“ Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm!

“ What sorrow awaits you who build big houses with money gained dishonestly! You believe your wealth will buy security, putting your family’s nest beyond the reach of danger.

Woe to him who dishonestly makes wealth for his house to place his nest on high, to escape the grasp of disaster!

“ Woe to him who makes evil profit for his household, To put his nest on high, To be saved from the hand of catastrophe!

Woe to him that getteth an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil!

Woe to him who dishonestly makes wealth for his house to place his nest on high, to escape from the reach of disaster!

Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!

The one who builds his house by unjust gain is as good as dead. He does this so he can build his nest way up high and escape the clutches of disaster.

Woe to him who gets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil!

Your fierceness has deceived you, The pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Who hold the height of the hill! Though you make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there,” says the Lord.

Then I turned and raised my eyes, and saw there a flying scroll.And he said to me,“ What do you see?” So I answered,“ I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits and its width ten cubits.”Then he said to me,“ This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole earth:‘ Every thief shall be expelled,’ according to this side of the scroll; and,‘ Every perjurer shall be expelled,’ according to that side of it.”“ I will send out the curse,” says the Lord of hosts;“ It shall enter the house of the thief And the house of the one who swears falsely by My name. It shall remain in the midst of his house And consume it, with its timber and stones.”

But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said,“ Look, my master has spared Naaman this Syrian, while not receiving from his hands what he brought; but as the Lord lives, I will run after him and take something from him.”So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him, and said,“ Is all well?”And he said,“ All is well. My master has sent me, saying,‘ Indeed, just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the mountains of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of garments.’”So Naaman said,“ Please, take two talents.” And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and handed them to two of his servants; and they carried them on ahead of him.When he came to the citadel, he took them from their hand, and stored them away in the house; then he let the men go, and they departed.Now he went in and stood before his master. Elisha said to him,“ Where did you go, Gehazi?” And he said,“ Your servant did not go anywhere.”Then he said to him,“ Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your descendants forever.” And he went out from his presence leprous, as white as snow.

When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor.And Joshua said,“ Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.” So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.

For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire; He blesses the greedy and renounces the Lord.The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.His ways are always prospering; Your judgments are far above, out of his sight; As for all his enemies, he sneers at them.He has said in his heart,“ I shall not be moved; I shall never be in adversity.”

Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.

But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace.And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere( before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord.

“ Here is the man who did not make God his strength, But trusted in the abundance of his riches, And strengthened himself in his wickedness.”

for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.”( Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out.And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)“ For it is written in the book of Psalms:‘ Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it’; and,‘ Let another take his office.’“ Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.And they prayed and said,“ You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosento take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.”

Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

You shall speak to him, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ Have you murdered and also taken possession?”’ And you shall speak to him, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours.”’”So Ahab said to Elijah,“ Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he answered,“ I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord:‘ Behold, I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your posterity, and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel, both bond and free.I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and made Israel sin.’And concerning Jezebel the Lord also spoke, saying,‘ The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.’The dogs shall eat whoever belongs to Ahab and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field.”

So Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying,“ Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near, next to my house; and for it I will give you a vineyard better than it. Or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in money.”But Naboth said to Ahab,“ The Lord forbid that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!”So Ahab went into his house sullen and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said,“ I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no food.

Because you have said,“ We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, It will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.”

The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own esteem.Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.

“ Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness And his chambers by injustice, Who uses his neighbor’s service without wages And gives him nothing for his work,Who says,‘ I will build myself a wide house with spacious chambers, And cut out windows for it, Paneling it with cedar And painting it with vermilion.’“ Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, And do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him.He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord.“ Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness, For shedding innocent blood, And practicing oppression and violence.”Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:“ They shall not lament for him, Saying,‘ Alas, my brother!’ or‘ Alas, my sister!’“ They shall not lament for him, Saying,‘ Alas, master!’ or‘ Alas, his glory!’He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey, Dragged and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor, He has violently seized a house which he did not build.“ Because he knows no quietness in his heart, He will not save anything he desires.Nothing is left for him to eat; Therefore his well-being will not last.In his self-sufficiency he will be in distress; Every hand of misery will come against him.When he is about to fill his stomach, God will cast on him the fury of His wrath, And will rain it on him while he is eating.He will flee from the iron weapon; A bronze bow will pierce him through.It is drawn, and comes out of the body; Yes, the glittering point comes out of his gall. Terrors come upon him;Total darkness is reserved for his treasures. An unfanned fire will consume him; It shall go ill with him who is left in his tent.The heavens will reveal his iniquity, And the earth will rise up against him.The increase of his house will depart, And his goods will flow away in the day of His wrath.

Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,” says the Lord.
