Wealth is treacherous, and the arrogant are never at rest. They open their mouths as wide as the grave, and like death, they are never satisfied. In their greed they have gathered up many nations and swallowed many peoples.

Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine.They have harps and lyres at their banquets, pipes and timbrels and wine, but they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of his hands. (niv)

Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks,who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent. (niv)

Whatever they plot against the Lord he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble. (niv)

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:“ God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (niv)

and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, (niv)

Is not Hamath like Arpad, and Samaria like Damascus?As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols, kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?’”When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say,“ I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes.For he says:“‘ By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their kings. (niv)

But while they are aroused, I will set out a feast for them and make them drunk, so that they shout with laughter— then sleep forever and not awake,” declares the Lord. (niv)

We have heard of Moab’s pride— how great is her arrogance!— of her conceit, her pride and her insolence; but her boasts are empty. (niv)

Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the land. (niv)
