“ Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.

“ Anyone who murders a human being will be killed by a human being. That is because I have made human beings so that they are like me.

“ Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.

If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image.

“‘ He who strikes any man mortally shall surely be put to death.

“ One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death,but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen; then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee.If a man schemes and comes presumptuously on his neighbor to kill him, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.

“‘ So you shall not pollute the land where you live; for blood pollutes the land. No atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in God’s likeness.

With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men who are made in the image of God.

Joab fled to Yahweh’s Tent, and held onto the horns of the altar.King Solomon was told,“ Joab has fled to Yahweh’s Tent, and behold, he is by the altar.” Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying,“ Go, fall on him.”Benaiah came to Yahweh’s Tent, and said to him,“ The king says,‘ Come out!’” He said,“ No; but I will die here.” Benaiah brought the king word again, saying,“ This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me.”The king said to him,“ Do as he has said, and fall on him, and bury him; that you may take away the blood, which Joab shed without cause, from me and from my father’s house.Yahweh will return his blood on his own head, because he fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, and my father David didn’t know it: Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.So their blood will return on the head of Joab, and on the head of his offspring forever. But for David, for his offspring, for his house, and for his throne, there will be peace forever from Yahweh.”Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and fell on him, and killed him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

The congregation shall deliver the man slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he had fled. He shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.

Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”

Against you, and you only, I have sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight, so you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.

If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him.If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

for he is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he doesn’t bear the sword in vain; for he is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil.
