非利士人与以色列人打仗。大卫带领仆人下去，与非利士人交战，大卫就疲乏了。巨人族的后裔以实‧比诺说要杀大卫；他的铜枪重三百舍客勒，腰间又佩着新刀。但洗鲁雅的儿子亚比筛帮助大卫攻击非利士人，杀死了他。当日，大卫的人向大卫起誓说：“你不可再与我们一同出战，免得以色列的灯熄灭了。”后来，在歌伯又与非利士人打仗，那时户沙人西比该杀了巨人族的后裔撒弗。他们又在歌伯与非利士人打仗，伯利恒人雅雷的儿子伊勒哈难杀了迦特人歌利亚；这人的枪杆粗如织布机的轴。又有一次，他们在迦特打仗。那里有一个身材高大的人，双手各有六根手指，双脚各有六根脚趾，共有二十四根；他也是巨人族的后裔。他向以色列骂阵，大卫的哥哥示米亚的儿子约拿单就杀了他。这四个人是迦特巨人族的后裔，都仆倒在大卫和他仆人的手下。

利乏音人所剩下的只有巴珊王噩。看哪，他的床是铁床，按照人肘的度量，长九肘，宽四肘，现今不是在亚扪人的拉巴吗？”

从非利士营中出来一个挑战的人，名叫歌利亚，是迦特人，身高六肘一虎口。

那地也算是利乏音人之地，因为先前利乏音人住在那里，亚扪人称他们为散送冥人。那里的百姓又大又多，像亚衲人一样高大，但耶和华从亚扪人面前除灭他们，亚扪人就占领他们的地，接续他们在那里居住。

以色列人中的二百五十个领袖，就是有名望、从会众中选出来的人，在摩西面前一同起来，

他们说：“来，让我们建造一座城和一座塔，塔顶通天。我们要为自己立名，免得我们分散在全地面上。”
