非利士人与以色列人又有了战事。大卫和跟随他的臣仆一同下去，要与非利士人争战；大卫疲倦了。他们住在歌伯。有一个人，是巨人的儿子，他的铜矛有三公斤半重，又佩带着新刀；他想要击杀大卫。洗鲁雅的儿子亚比筛帮助了大卫；亚比筛击打那非利士人，把他杀死了。那时，跟随大卫的人向他起誓说：“以后你不可再与我们一同出去打仗，免得以色列的灯熄灭了。”后来，以色列人又在歌伯与非利士人争战。那时，户沙人西比该击杀了巨人的一个儿子撒弗。在歌伯又再与非利士人争战。伯利恒人雅雷俄珥金的儿子伊勒哈难击杀了迦特人歌利亚。这人的矛杆好像织布的机轴那么粗大。在迦特又有一场战事，那里有一个身量高大的人，手脚都各有六个指头，总数是二十四个；这人也是巨人所生的。这人向以色列人骂阵，大卫的哥哥示米亚的儿子约拿单把他击杀了。以上这四个人都是迦特城里那个巨人所生的，都死在大卫和大卫臣仆的手下。

（利乏音人的余民中，只留下巴珊王噩一人；看哪，他的床是铁的，长四公尺，宽两公尺，这是按一般的尺寸量度，现在不是还在亚扪人的拉巴吗？）

有一个挑战的人从非利士人的军营中出来，名叫歌利亚，是迦特人，身高三公尺。

（那地也算为利乏音人的地，以前利乏音人住在那里，但亚扪人称他们为散送冥。这族人人数众多，身体高大，像亚衲族人一样；但耶和华从亚扪人面前消灭了他们，亚扪人就占领了他们的地业，住在那里，

反抗摩西，还有以色列人中的二百五十个人，就是会众的领袖；会众中被选出有名望的人。

他们又说：“来，我们建一座城，造一座塔，塔顶要通天。我们要为自己立名，免得分散在全地上。”
