我父曾命我曰、當立誓、我死後、必葬我於迦南地所備之墓、今求容我往彼、葬父而返、

‘ My father made me swear an oath and said,“ I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’”

‘ My father made me give my word to him. He said,“ I’m about to die. Bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” So let me go there and bury my father. Then I’ll come back.’ ”

‘ My father made me swear, saying,“ I am about to die: in my tomb that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.” Now therefore, let me please go up and bury my father. Then I will return.’”

Tell him that my father made me swear an oath. He said to me,‘ Listen, I am about to die. Take my body back to the land of Canaan, and bury me in the tomb I prepared for myself.’ So please allow me to go and bury my father. After his burial, I will return without delay.”

They buried him in his own tomb, which he had made for himself in the City of David; and they laid him in the bed which was filled with spices and various ingredients prepared in a mixture of ointments. They made a very great burning for him.

‘ What have you here, and whom have you here, That you have hewn a sepulcher here, As he who hews himself a sepulcher on high, Who carves a tomb for himself in a rock?

and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.

When the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him,“ Now if I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt,but let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” And he said,“ I will do as you have said.”Then he said,“ Swear to me.” And he swore to him. So Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

Then He said to another,“ Follow Me.” But he said,“ Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”Jesus said to him,“ Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”

Then he charged them and said to them:“ I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place.

Then another of His disciples said to Him,“ Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”But Jesus said to him,“ Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

If a man begets a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with goodness, or indeed he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he—

Also they are afraid of height, And of terrors in the way; When the almond tree blossoms, The grasshopper is a burden, And desire fails. For man goes to his eternal home, And the mourners go about the streets.

Then Israel said to Joseph,“ Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.

Then Saul said to Jonathan,“ Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, and said,“ I only tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. So now I must die!”

And Joseph said to his brethren,“ I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”

In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”

For I know that You will bring me to death, And to the house appointed for all living.

Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.

Their blood they have shed like water all around Jerusalem, And there was no one to bury them.

But I must die in this land, I must not cross over the Jordan; but you shall cross over and possess that good land.
