約瑟臨終之時憑信心提到以色列人將來要離開埃及，並交代要如何處理自己的骸骨。

沒有人關心義人的死亡，沒有人明白虔誠人的去世。其實義人去世是脫離災難。這些正直的人得享平安，在墳墓裡得到安息。

從此以後，雅各和其他先祖們便定居埃及，直到去世。

以實瑪利活了一百三十七歲，壽終正寢，歸到他祖先那裡。

年紀老邁，壽終正寢。他的兒子以掃和雅各把他安葬了。

但人一死，就失去力量；人一嚥氣，就不知去向。

我知道你要帶我去死亡之地，那是你為眾生所定的歸宿。

這裡有名字記錄在天上的眾長子的教會，有審判眾人的上帝和已達到純全的義人的靈魂，

這些人到死都滿懷信心。他們雖然沒有得到上帝所應許的，卻從遠處望見了，就歡喜快樂，承認自己在世上不過是寄居的異鄉人。他們抱這樣的態度，表明他們正在尋找一個家鄉。如果他們想念的是自己離開的家鄉，就找機會回去了。然而，他們渴慕的是天上更美的家鄉。所以，上帝不以被他們稱為上帝為恥，因為祂已經為他們預備了一座城。

耶和華把亞伯蘭帶到外面，對他說：「你抬頭看看天空，數數繁星，你能數得盡嗎？你的後裔必這麼多。」

但他手持強弓，雙臂穩健有力，因為雅各的大能者——以色列的牧者和磐石幫助他。你父親的上帝必幫助你，全能者必賜你天上的恩澤、地上的百福，使你子孫興旺、牛羊滿圈。你父親的祝福高過亙古永存的峰巒，多如綿延無盡的群山，願這一切的祝福都臨到約瑟頭上，臨到這超越眾弟兄的人身上。

你必壽終正寢才歸墳墓，如同莊稼熟後才被收割。

「主啊，現在你的話已經成就，可以讓你的奴僕安然離世了，

然後，他對民眾說：「看啊，這塊石頭可以為我們作證，它聽到了耶和華所吩咐我們的話。如果你們背棄上帝，它必作證。」於是，約書亞命民眾各自返回自己的地方。後來，耶和華的僕人、嫩的兒子約書亞去世了，享年一百一十歲。

雅各把他的兒子們都叫來，對他們說：「你們到我身邊來，我要把你們將來的遭遇告訴你們。
