And he named the second Ephraim;“ For,” he said,“ God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

and the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two; all the people of the house of Jacob, who came to Egypt, were seventy.

Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are.

Then the lot for the sons of Joseph went from the Jordan at Jericho to the waters of Jericho on the east into the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel.It went from Bethel to Luz, and continued to the border of the Archites at Ataroth.Then it went down westward to the territory of the Japhletites, as far as the territory of lower Beth horon even to Gezer, and it ended at the sea.The sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance.Now this was the territory of the sons of Ephraim according to their families: the border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth addar, as far as upper Beth horon.Then the border went westward at Michmethath on the north, and the border turned eastward to Taanath shiloh and continued beyond it to the east of Janoah.Then it went down from Janoah to Ataroth and to Naarah, then reached Jericho and came out at the Jordan.From Tappuah the border continued westward to the brook of Kanah, and it ended at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim according to their families,together with the cities which were set apart for the sons of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.But they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites live in the midst of Ephraim to this day, and they became forced laborers.

Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very large number of livestock. So when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that it was indeed a place suitable for livestock,the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,“ Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,the land which the Lord conquered before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”And they said,“ If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as our property; do not take us across the Jordan.”But Moses said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben,“ Should your brothers go to war while you remain here?And why are you discouraging the sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the Lord has given them?This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh barnea to see the land.For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the Lord had given them.So the Lord’s anger burned on that day, and He swore, saying,‘ None of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; for they did not follow Me fully,except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun; for they have followed the Lord fully.’So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the Lord came to an end.Now behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, born of sinful men, to add still more to the burning anger of the Lord against Israel.For if you turn away from following Him, He will once more leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people.”Then they approached him and said,“ We will build sheepfolds for our livestock here and cities for our little ones;but we ourselves will be armed, hurrying ahead of the sons of Israel, until we have brought them to their place, while our little ones live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.We will not return to our homes until every one of the sons of Israel has gained possession of his inheritance.But we will not have an inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan toward the east.”So Moses said to them,“ If you will do this, if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for the war,and all of you armed men cross over the Jordan before the Lord until He has driven His enemies out from Him,and the land is subdued before the Lord, then afterward you may return and be free of obligation toward the Lord and toward Israel, and this land shall be yours as property before the Lord.But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure that your sin will find you out.Build yourselves cities for your little ones, and sheepfolds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”Then the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying,“ Your servants will do just as my lord commands.Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead,while your servants, that is, everyone who is armed for war, cross over in the presence of the Lord to battle, just as my lord says.”So Moses gave the command regarding them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the sons of Israel.And Moses said to them,“ If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, everyone who is armed for battle, cross with you over the Jordan in the presence of the Lord, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as their property;but if they do not cross over with you armed, they shall instead be settled among you in the land of Canaan.”And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying,“ As the Lord has said to your servants, so we will do.We ourselves will cross over armed in the presence of the Lord into the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance shall remain with us across the Jordan.”So Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad, the sons of Reuben, and to the half tribe of Joseph’s son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, the land with its cities with their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.And the sons of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,Atroth shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,Beth nimrah, and Beth haran as fortified cities, and sheepfolds for sheep.The sons of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,Nebo, and Baal meon— their names being changed— and Sibmah, and they gave other names to the cities which they built.The sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.So Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth jair.Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and named it Nobah, after his own name.

Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, And on His Law he meditates day and night.He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season, And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine Within your house, Your children like olive plants Around your table.

Of Joseph he said,“ Blessed of the Lord be his land, With the choice things of heaven, with the dew, And from the deep waters lying beneath,And with the choice yield of the sun, And the choice produce of the months;And with the best things of the ancient mountains, With the choice things of the everlasting hills,And with the choice things of the earth and its fullness, And the favor of Him who dwelt in the bush. Let it come to the head of Joseph, And to the top of the head of the one who was prince among his brothers.As the firstborn of his ox, majesty is his, And his horns are the horns of the wild ox; With them he will gore the peoples All at once, to the ends of the earth. And those are the ten thousands of Ephraim, And those are the thousands of Manasseh.”

But his father refused and said,“ I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”So he blessed them that day, saying,“ By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,‘ May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’ ” And so he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

The angel who has redeemed me from all evil, Bless the boys; And may my name live on in them, And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”

Then the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying,“ Why have you given me only one lot and one portion as an inheritance, though I am a numerous people whom the Lord has blessed up to this point?”And Joshua said to them,“ If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.”The sons of Joseph then said,“ The hill country is not enough for us, but all the Canaanites who live in the valley land have iron chariots, both those who are in Beth shean and its towns and those who are in the Valley of Jezreel.”But Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying,“ You are a numerous people and have great power; you shall not have one lot only,

Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.So she conceived and gave birth to a son, and said,“ God has taken away my disgrace.”And she named him Joseph, saying,“ May the Lord give me another son.”

Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways.

And it had strong stems fit for scepters of rulers, And its height was raised above the clouds So that it was seen in its height with the mass of its branches.

Now it came about after these things that Joseph was told,“ Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him.
