“ Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders, but he will attack them at their heels.

“ Gad will be attacked by a group of robbers. But he will attack them as they run away.

“ Raiders shall raid Gad, but he shall raid at their heels.

“ Gad will be attacked by marauding bands, but he will attack them when they retreat.

Gad will be attacked by raiders, but he will attack their heels.

“ Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him, But he shall triumph at last.

Gad, a troop shall press upon him; But he shall press upon their heel.

“ A troop will press on Gad, but he will press on their heel.

So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, that is, the spirit of Tilgath pilneser king of Assyria, and he took them into exile, namely the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and to the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.

Then Leah said,“ How fortunate!” So she named him Gad.

Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very large number of livestock. So when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that it was indeed a place suitable for livestock,the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,“ Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,the land which the Lord conquered before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”And they said,“ If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as our property; do not take us across the Jordan.”But Moses said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben,“ Should your brothers go to war while you remain here?And why are you discouraging the sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the Lord has given them?This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh barnea to see the land.For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the Lord had given them.So the Lord’s anger burned on that day, and He swore, saying,‘ None of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; for they did not follow Me fully,except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun; for they have followed the Lord fully.’So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the Lord came to an end.Now behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, born of sinful men, to add still more to the burning anger of the Lord against Israel.For if you turn away from following Him, He will once more leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people.”Then they approached him and said,“ We will build sheepfolds for our livestock here and cities for our little ones;but we ourselves will be armed, hurrying ahead of the sons of Israel, until we have brought them to their place, while our little ones live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.We will not return to our homes until every one of the sons of Israel has gained possession of his inheritance.But we will not have an inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan toward the east.”So Moses said to them,“ If you will do this, if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for the war,and all of you armed men cross over the Jordan before the Lord until He has driven His enemies out from Him,and the land is subdued before the Lord, then afterward you may return and be free of obligation toward the Lord and toward Israel, and this land shall be yours as property before the Lord.But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure that your sin will find you out.Build yourselves cities for your little ones, and sheepfolds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”Then the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying,“ Your servants will do just as my lord commands.Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead,while your servants, that is, everyone who is armed for war, cross over in the presence of the Lord to battle, just as my lord says.”So Moses gave the command regarding them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the sons of Israel.And Moses said to them,“ If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, everyone who is armed for battle, cross with you over the Jordan in the presence of the Lord, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as their property;but if they do not cross over with you armed, they shall instead be settled among you in the land of Canaan.”And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying,“ As the Lord has said to your servants, so we will do.We ourselves will cross over armed in the presence of the Lord into the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance shall remain with us across the Jordan.”So Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad, the sons of Reuben, and to the half tribe of Joseph’s son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, the land with its cities with their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.And the sons of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,Atroth shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,Beth nimrah, and Beth haran as fortified cities, and sheepfolds for sheep.The sons of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,Nebo, and Baal meon— their names being changed— and Sibmah, and they gave other names to the cities which they built.The sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.So Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth jair.Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and named it Nobah, after his own name.

Of Gad he said,“ Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad; He lies down as a lion, And tears the arm, also the crown of the head.Then he selected the choicest part for himself, For there the ruler’s portion was reserved; And he came with the leaders of the people; He executed the justice of the Lord, And His ordinances with Israel.”

and Malchiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah.The sons of Pedaiah were Zerubbabel and Shimei. And the sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister;and Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah, and Jushab hesed, five.The sons of Hananiah were Pelatiah and Jeshaiah, the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shecaniah.The descendants of Shecaniah were Shemaiah, and the sons of Shemaiah: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat, six.

Now the sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan, as far as Salecah.Joel was the head and Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat in Bashan.Their relatives of their fathers’ households were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber, seven.These were the sons of Abihail, the son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz;Ahi the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was head of their fathers’ households.They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and in its towns, and in all the pasture lands of Sharon, as far as their borders.All of these were enrolled in the genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.The sons of Reuben, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, consisting of valiant men, men who carried shield and sword and shot with a bow and were skillful in battle, totaled 44,760 who went to war.They made war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.They were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all who were with them were handed over to them; for they cried out to God in the battle, and He answered their prayers because they trusted in Him.They took away their livestock: their fifty thousand camels, 250,000 sheep, and two thousand donkeys; and a hundred thousand people.For many fell mortally wounded, because the war was of God. And they settled in their place until the exile.

Now after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, rose up to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.He judged Israel for twenty three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.After him, Jair the Gileadite rose up and judged Israel for twenty two years.And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities in the land of Gilead that are called Havvoth jair to this day.And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; so they abandoned the Lord and did not serve Him.And the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.And they afflicted and oppressed the sons of Israel that year; for eighteen years they oppressed all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan, in Gilead in the land of the Amorites.And the sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was in great difficulty.Then the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying,“ We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have abandoned our God and served the Baals.”And the Lord said to the sons of Israel,“ Did I not save you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines?

With the other half tribe, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the Lord gave to them;

And the sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
