  • Judges 18:22-31
When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house gathered together and overtook the children of Dan.And they called out to the children of Dan. So they turned around and said to Micah,“ What ails you, that you have gathered such a company?”So he said,“ You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and you have gone away. Now what more do I have? How can you say to me,‘ What ails you?’”And the children of Dan said to him,“ Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry men fall upon you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household!”Then the children of Dan went their way. And when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house. So they took the things Micah had made, and the priest who had belonged to him, and went to Laish, to a people quiet and secure; and they struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire. There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no ties with anyone. It was in the valley that belongs to Beth Rehob. So they rebuilt the city and dwelt there. And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel. However, the name of the city formerly was Laish. Then the children of Dan set up for themselves the carved image; and Jonathan the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.So they set up for themselves Micah’s carved image which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
  • Judges 16:22-30
However, the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaven. Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice. And they said:“ Our god has delivered into our hands Samson our enemy!”When the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said:“ Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy, The destroyer of our land, And the one who multiplied our dead.”So it happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said,“ Call for Samson, that he may perform for us.” So they called for Samson from the prison, and he performed for them. And they stationed him between the pillars. Then Samson said to the lad who held him by the hand,“ Let me feel the pillars which support the temple, so that I can lean on them.”Now the temple was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines were there— about three thousand men and women on the roof watching while Samson performed. Then Samson called to the Lord, saying,“ O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!”And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars which supported the temple, and he braced himself against them, one on his right and the other on his left. Then Samson said,“ Let me die with the Philistines!” And he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than he had killed in his life.
  • Judges 14:1-15
Now Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. So he went up and told his father and mother, saying,“ I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife.”Then his father and mother said to him,“ Is there no woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” And Samson said to his father,“ Get her for me, for she pleases me well.”But his father and mother did not know that it was of the Lord— that He was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines. For at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel. So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him.And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. After some time, when he returned to get her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion.He took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.So his father went down to the woman. And Samson gave a feast there, for young men used to do so.And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him. Then Samson said to them,“ Let me pose a riddle to you. If you can correctly solve and explain it to me within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing. But if you cannot explain it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.” And they said to him,“ Pose your riddle, that we may hear it.”So he said to them:“ Out of the eater came something to eat, And out of the strong came something sweet.” Now for three days they could not explain the riddle. But it came to pass on the seventh day that they said to Samson’s wife,“ Entice your husband, that he may explain the riddle to us, or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us in order to take what is ours? Is that not so?”
