Jacob said to Joseph,“ The Mighty God appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan. He blessed me there.

When Abram was ninety- nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said,“ I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.

He struggled with the angel and overcame him; he wept and begged for his favor. He found him at Bethel and talked with him there—

Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz( that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.God said to him,“ Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.And God said to him,“ I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.”

When they sent men to spy out Bethel( formerly called Luz),

He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.There above it stood the Lord, and he said:“ I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought,“ Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”He was afraid and said,“ How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.
