One day Abraham said to his oldest servant, the man in charge of his household,“ Take an oath by putting your hand under my thigh.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ The time has come for you to die. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the Tabernacle, so that I may commission him there.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tabernacle.

As the time of King David’s death approached, he gave this charge to his son Solomon:

“ Soon I will die,” Joseph told his brothers,“ but God will surely come to help you and lead you out of this land of Egypt. He will bring you back to the land he solemnly promised to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath, and he said,“ When God comes to help you and lead you back, you must take my bones with you.”

Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God.

“ Is not all human life a struggle? Our lives are like that of a hired hand,

And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,

to live forever and never see the grave.

No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave. Interlude

Can the dead live again? If so, this would give me hope through all my years of struggle, and I would eagerly await the release of death.

So Jacob went to Egypt. He died there, as did our ancestors.Their bodies were taken to Shechem and buried in the tomb Abraham had bought for a certain price from Hamor’s sons in Shechem.

It was by faith that Joseph, when he was about to die, said confidently that the people of Israel would leave Egypt. He even commanded them to take his bones with them when they left.

All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him.

For the dead do not remember you. Who can praise you from the grave?

By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”

And I know you are sending me to my death— the destination of all who live.

Jacob replied,“ I have traveled this earth for 130 hard years. But my life has been short compared to the lives of my ancestors.”

For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong.
