卻不能救贖自己的生命，也無法向上帝付生命的贖價。

「人生在世豈不像服勞役嗎？他有生之年豈不像個雇工嗎？

按著定命，人人都有一死，死後還有審判。

以致可以永遠活著，不進墳墓。

誰能長生不死？誰能救自己脫離死亡的權勢呢？（細拉）

人若死了，還能復生嗎？我要在勞苦的歲月中等待，直到我得釋放的日子來臨。

從此以後，雅各和其他先祖們便定居埃及，直到去世。後來他們的遺體被帶回示劍，安葬在亞伯拉罕買自哈抹子孫的墓地裡。

約瑟臨終之時憑信心提到以色列人將來要離開埃及，並交代要如何處理自己的骸骨。

人都難免一死，就像覆水難收。然而，上帝不是要奪取人的性命，而是要設法使流亡的人重新回來。

因為死去的人不會記得你，誰會在陰間讚美你呢？

你必汗流滿面，才有飯吃，一直到你歸回塵土。因為你是塵土造的，也必歸回塵土。」

我知道你要帶我去死亡之地，那是你為眾生所定的歸宿。

雅各回答說：「我在世上寄居一百三十年了，我的日子又苦又短，不像我祖先那樣高壽。」

你壽終正寢、與祖先同眠之後，我必立你的後裔接替你的王位，使他江山穩固。
