Genesis 30:17-21
God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.Then Leah said,“ God has given me my reward, because I gave my slave to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.And Leah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Jacob.Then Leah said,“ God has endowed me with a good gift; finally my husband will acknowledge me as his wife, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.Afterward she gave birth to a daughter, and named her Dinah.

Genesis 29:32-35
Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and named him Reuben, for she said,“ Because the Lord has seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.”Then she conceived again and gave birth to a son, and said,“ Because the Lord has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.And she conceived again and gave birth to a son, and said,“ Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named Levi.And she conceived again and gave birth to a son, and said,“ This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him Judah. Genesis 34:1-31
Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land.When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her and raped her.But he was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying,“ Get me this young woman as a wife.”Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob said nothing until they came in.Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard about it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.But Hamor spoke with them, saying,“ The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him in marriage.And intermarry with us; give your daughters to us and take our daughters for yourselves.So you will live with us, and the land shall be open to you; live and trade in it and acquire property in it.”Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers,“ Let me find favor in your sight, and I will give whatever you tell me.Demand of me ever so much bridal payment and gift, and I will give whatever you tell me; but give me the girl in marriage.”But Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because he had defiled their sister Dinah.They said to them,“ We cannot do this thing, that is, give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us.Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you will become like us, in that every male of you will be circumcised,then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people.But if you do not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.”Now their words seemed reasonable to Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.The young man did not delay to do this, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. Now he was more respected than all the household of his father.So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the people of their city, saying,“ These men are friendly to us; therefore let them live in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them. We will take their daughters in marriage, and give our daughters to them.Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised.Will their livestock and their property and all their animals not be ours? Let’s just consent to them, and they will live with us.”All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.Now it came about on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob’s sons— Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers— each took his sword and came upon the city undetected, and killed every male.They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and left.Jacob’s sons came upon those killed and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister.They took their flocks, their herds, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city and that which was in the field;and they captured and looted all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives, even everything that was in the houses.Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi,“ You have brought trouble on me by making me repulsive among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since my men are few in number, they will band together against me and attack me, and I will be destroyed, I and my household!”But they said,“ Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”

Genesis 49:3-15
“ Reuben, you are my firstborn, My might and the beginning of my strength, Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.Uncontrollable as water, you shall not have preeminence, Because you went up to your father’s bed; Then you defiled it— he went up to my couch.“ Simeon and Levi are brothers; Their swords are implements of violence.May my soul not enter into their council; May my glory not be united with their assembly; For in their anger they killed men, And in their self will they lamed oxen.Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; And their wrath, for it is cruel. I will scatter them in Jacob, And disperse them among Israel.“ As for you, Judah, your brothers shall praise you; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father’s sons shall bow down to you.Judah is a lion’s cub; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He crouches, he lies down as a lion, And as a lion, who dares to stir him up?The scepter will not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.He ties his foal to the vine, And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine; He washes his garments in wine, And his robes in the blood of grapes.His eyes are dull from wine, And his teeth white from milk.“ Zebulun will reside at the seashore; And he shall be a harbor for ships, And his flank shall be toward Sidon.“ Issachar is a strong donkey, Lying down between the sheepfolds.When he saw that a resting place was good And that the land was pleasant, He bowed his shoulder to carry burdens, And became a slave at forced labor.

Then it came about after the plague, that the Lord spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,“ Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ households, whoever is able to go to war in Israel.”So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,“ Take a census of the people from twenty years old and upward, as the Lord has commanded Moses.” Now the sons of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were as follows:Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.These are the families of the Reubenites, and those who were counted of them were 43,730.The son of Pallu: Eliab.The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram who were called by the congregation, who fought against Moses and against Aaron in the group of Korah, when they fought against the Lord,and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up along with Korah, when that group died, when the fire devoured 250 men, so that they became a warning sign.The sons of Korah, however, did not die.The sons of Simeon by their families: of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the family of the Jachinites;of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.These are the families of the Simeonites, 22,200 in number.The sons of Gad by their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the family of the Haggites; of Shuni, the family of the Shunites;of Ozni, the family of the Oznites; of Eri, the family of the Erites;of Arod, the family of the Arodites; of Areli, the family of the Arelites.These are the families of the sons of Gad according to those who were numbered of them, 40,500.The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.The sons of Judah by their families were: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Perezites; of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites.The sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.These are the families of Judah by those who were numbered of them, 76,500.The sons of Issachar by their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the family of the Punites;of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites.These are the families of Issachar by those who were numbered of them, 64,300.The sons of Zebulun by their families: of Sered, the family of the Seredites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.These are the families of the Zebulunites by those who were numbered of them, 60,500.The sons of Joseph by their families: Manasseh and Ephraim.The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites; and Machir fathered Gilead: of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites.These are the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the family of the Iezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites;and of Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and of Shechem, the family of the Shechemites;and of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.These are the families of Manasseh; and those who were numbered of them were 52,700.These are the sons of Ephraim by their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites.These are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.These are the families of the sons of Ephraim by those who were numbered of them, 32,500. These are the families of Dan by their families.All the families of the Shuhamites, by those who were numbered of them, were 64,400.The sons of Asher by their families: of Imnah, the family of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the family of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Beriites.Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites.And the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.These are the families of the sons of Asher by those who were numbered of them, 53,400.The sons of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites;of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.These are the families of Naphtali by their families; and those who were numbered of them were 45,400.These are the ones who were numbered of the sons of Israel, 601,730.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Among these the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names.To a larger group you shall increase their inheritance, and to a smaller group you shall decrease their inheritance; each shall be given their inheritance corresponding to the total of those who were numbered of them.But the land shall be divided by lot. They shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.Corresponding to the selection by lot, their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller groups.”These are those who were numbered of the Levites according to their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites.These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, and the family of the Korahites. Kohath fathered Amram.And the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and their sister Miriam.And to Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before the Lord.Those who were numbered of them were twenty three thousand, every male from a month old and upward, for they were not numbered among the sons of Israel since no inheritance was given to them among the sons of Israel.These are the ones who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.For the Lord had said of them,“ They shall certainly die in the wilderness.” And not a man was left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

You and Aaron shall count them by their armies.With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father’s household.These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;of the tribe of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;of the tribe of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.These are the men who were called from the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel.”So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,and they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month. Then they registered by ancestry in their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head,just as the Lord had commanded Moses. So he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai.Now the sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.Of the sons of Simeon, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, their numbered men, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.Of the sons of Gad, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.Of the sons of Judah, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.Of the sons of Issachar, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.Of the sons of Zebulun, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.Of the sons of Manasseh, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.Of the sons of Benjamin, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.Of the sons of Dan, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Dan were 62,700.Of the sons of Asher, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.Of the sons of Naphtali, their descendants by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war,their numbered men of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron counted, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each of whom was of his father’s household.So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers’ households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war in Israel,all the numbered men were 603,550.The Levites, however, were not counted among them by their fathers’ tribe.For the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying,“ Only the tribe of Levi you shall not count, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel.And you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over everything that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the tabernacle.So when the tabernacle is to move on, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But the layman who comes near it shall be put to death.So the sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own flag, according to their armies.But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no divine wrath against the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be responsible for service to the tabernacle of the testimony.”And the sons of Israel did so; in accordance with all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so they did.

The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying,“ Make yourself two trumpets of silver, you shall make them of hammered work; and you shall use them for summoning the congregation and breaking camp.Now when both are blown, all the congregation shall meet you at the entrance of the tent of meeting.But if only one is blown, then the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall meet you.And when you blow an alarm, the camps that are pitched on the east side shall set out.Then when you sound an alarm the second time, the camps that are pitched on the south side shall set out; an alarm is to be sounded for them to break camp.When convening the assembly, however, you shall blow the trumpets without sounding an alarm.The sons of Aaron, moreover, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and this shall be a permanent statute for you throughout your generations.And when you go to war in your land against the enemy who attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, so that you will be thought of by the Lord your God, and be saved from your enemies.Also on the day of your joy and at your appointed feasts, and on the first days of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the Lord your God.”Now in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was lifted from above the tabernacle of the testimony;and the sons of Israel set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled in the wilderness of Paran.So they moved on for the first time in accordance with the command of the Lord through Moses.The flag of the camp of the sons of Judah, by their armies, set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army,and Nethanel the son of Zuar, over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar;and Eliab the son of Helon over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun.Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, set out.Next the flag of the camp of Reuben, by their armies, set out with Elizur the son of Shedeur, over its army,and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon,and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the tribal army of the sons of Gad.Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and the tabernacle was set up before their arrival.Next the flag of the camp of the sons of Ephraim, by their armies, set out, with Elishama the son of Ammihud over its army,and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh;and Abidan the son of Gideoni over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin.Then the flag of the camp of the sons of Dan, by their armies, which formed the rear guard for all the camps, set out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai over its army,and Pagiel the son of Ochran over the tribal army of the sons of Asher;and Ahira the son of Enan over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali.This was the order of marching for the sons of Israel by their armies as they set out.Then Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father in law,“ We are setting out to the place of which the Lord said,‘ I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will do you good, for the Lord has promised good concerning Israel.”But he said to him,“ I will not come, but rather will go to my own land and relatives.”Then he said,“ Please do not leave us, since you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will be as eyes for us.So it will be, if you go with us, that whatever good the Lord does for us, we will do for you.”So they moved on from the mountain of the Lord three days’ journey, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord going on in front of them for the three days, to seek out a resting place for them.And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.Then it came about when the ark set out that Moses said,“ Rise up, Lord! And may Your enemies be scattered, And those who hate You flee from Your presence.”And when it came to rest, he said,“ Return, Lord, To the myriad thousands of Israel.”
