雅各打發猶大先去見約瑟，請派人引路往歌珊去；於是他們來到歌珊地。約瑟套車往歌珊去，迎接他父親以色列，及至見了面，就伏在父親的頸項上，哭了許久。

在我父的家裏有許多住處；若是沒有，我就早已告訴你們了。我去原是為你們預備地方去。我若去為你們預備了地方，就必再來接你們到我那裏去，我在哪裏，叫你們也在那裏。

父啊，我在哪裏，願你所賜給我的人也同我在那裏，叫他們看見你所賜給我的榮耀；因為創立世界以前，你已經愛我了。

你們要說：『你的僕人，從幼年直到如今，都以養牲畜為業，連我們的祖宗也都以此為業。』這樣，你們可以住在歌珊地，因為凡牧羊的都被埃及人所厭惡。」約瑟進去告訴法老說：「我的父親和我的弟兄帶着羊羣牛羣，並一切所有的，從迦南地來了，如今在歌珊地。」約瑟從他弟兄中挑出五個人來，引他們去見法老。法老問約瑟的弟兄說：「你們以何事為業？」他們對法老說：「你僕人是牧羊的，連我們的祖宗也是牧羊的。」他們又對法老說：「迦南地的饑荒甚大，僕人的羊羣沒有草吃，所以我們來到這地寄居。現在求你容僕人住在歌珊地。」法老對約瑟說：「你父親和你弟兄到你這裏來了，埃及地都在你面前，只管叫你父親和你弟兄住在國中最好的地；他們可以住在歌珊地。你若知道他們中間有甚麼能人，就派他們看管我的牲畜。」

惟獨以色列人所住的歌珊地沒有冰雹。
