他的儿女都来安慰他，他却不肯接受他们的安慰，说：“我一定会凄凄惨惨地下到阴间，去我儿子那里。”约瑟的父亲为他哀哭。

犹大对他的众弟兄说：“我们杀死弟弟、掩盖罪行有什么益处呢？不如把他卖给以实玛利人，不要下手害他，他毕竟是我们的弟弟，我们的骨肉啊！”其他弟兄都赞成他的意见。

大卫说：“那天我见以东人多益在那里，就知道他一定会告诉扫罗。是我连累了你父亲一家。

报信的答道：“以色列人被非利士人击溃，伤亡惨重，你的两个儿子何弗尼及非尼哈都死了，上帝的约柜也被掳走了。”以利年老体胖，听到约柜被掳去，就从门边的座位上向后跌倒，颈断身亡。他做士师审理以色列人的事务共四十年。

合乎上帝心意的忧伤会带来悔改，使人得到救恩，永不后悔，但世俗的忧伤只会带来死亡。

弟兄姊妹，关于安息的信徒，我不愿意你们一无所知，免得你们像那些没有盼望的人一样悲伤。
