雅各認出那件彩衣，說：「這是我兒子的衣服，一定是野獸把他吃了，約瑟一定被撕碎了！」

雅各說：「你們使我連連失去兒子，約瑟沒了，西緬沒了，你們還要帶走便雅憫！災禍都落在了我頭上！」

雅各說：「我的兒子不可跟你們去。他哥哥已經死了，現在只剩下他。要是他在路上遇到什麼意外，你們會使我這白髮蒼蒼的老人淒淒慘慘地進墳墓。」

以色列把約瑟叫來，對他說：「你哥哥們在示劍放羊，我要派你去他們那裡。」約瑟說：「好的。」以色列說：「你去看看你哥哥們以及羊群是否平安，然後回來告訴我。」於是，約瑟就從希伯崙谷出發去示劍。
