雅各認出那件彩衣，說：「這是我兒子的衣服，一定是野獸把他吃了，約瑟一定被撕碎了！」雅各撕裂自己的衣服，束上麻布，為約瑟哀傷了好幾天。他的兒女都來安慰他，他卻不肯接受他們的安慰，說：「我一定會淒淒慘慘地下到陰間，去我兒子那裡。」約瑟的父親為他哀哭。

拉結臨死前給兒子取名叫便·俄尼，雅各卻叫他便雅憫。

雅各說：「你們使我連連失去兒子，約瑟沒了，西緬沒了，你們還要帶走便雅憫！災禍都落在了我頭上！」

他們說：「僕人們共有弟兄十二人，父親住在迦南，最年幼的弟弟留在父親身邊，還有一個已經去世。」

便雅憫的兒子是比拉、比結、亞實別、基拉、乃幔、以希、羅實、姆平、戶平和亞勒。
