就從席間站起來，脫了外衣，拿手巾束腰；然後倒水在盆裏，洗起門徒的腳來，又用束腰的手巾來擦乾。這樣、就到了西門彼得那裏了；彼得對耶穌說：『主啊，你洗我的腳麼？』耶穌回答他說：『我所作的、你現在不曉得，此後自會明白。』彼得對耶穌說：『你決不可洗我的腳，永遠不可！』耶穌回答他說：『我若不洗你，你就不是和我一同有分了。』西門彼得對耶穌說：『那麼主啊、不單我的腳，還有手和頭呢！』耶穌對他說：『洗了澡的人、除了腳以外是無需乎再洗的；他乃是完全潔淨了；你們是潔淨，然而不都是。』他原知道那要把他送官的是誰，故此他說：『你們不都是潔淨。』洗完了他們的腳，耶穌就穿上外衣，再坐席，對他們說：『我向你們作的、你們明白麼？你們稱呼我：「老師啊，主啊！」你們說的不錯；我本來是。那麼我做主做老師的尚且洗你們的腳，你們呢、也應該彼此洗腳啊。我將模範給了你們，是要叫你們照我所向你們作的去作。我實實在在地告訴你們，僕人不比主人大，被差遣的也不比差他的大。你們既知道這些事，若去實行，就有福了。
