就離席站起來，脫了外衣，把毛巾束在腰間，然後倒了一盆水為門徒洗腳，用束在腰間的毛巾擦乾。輪到西門·彼得的時候，他說：「主啊！你要洗我的腳嗎？」耶穌回答說：「我這樣做，你現在雖然不明白，將來一定會明白。」彼得說：「你絕對不可以洗我的腳。」耶穌說：「如果我不洗你的腳，你就和我沒有關係了。」西門·彼得說：「主啊，不只我的腳，連我的手和頭也幫我洗吧。」耶穌說：「洗過澡的人全身是乾淨的，只要洗洗腳就好了。你們是乾淨的，但不是每一個都乾淨。」因為耶穌知道誰要出賣祂，所以說：「你們不是每一個都乾淨。」耶穌給門徒洗完了腳，便穿上外衣再次坐下來，然後問道：「我為你們做的，你們明白嗎？你們稱呼我『老師』，也稱呼我『主』，你們稱呼得對，因為我是。我是你們的老師又是你們的主，尚且給你們洗腳，你們更應當彼此洗腳。我給你們立了一個榜樣，好讓你們效法我。「我實實在在地告訴你們，奴僕不能大過主人，受差遣的也不能大過差遣他的人。既然你們明白這個道理，如果去實踐，就有福了。
