Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought,“ We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.”

When they were emptying their sacks, there was each man’s bag of money in his sack! When they and their father saw the bags of money, they were afraid.

When I tried to make sense of this, it was troubling to me.

accusing her of impropriety and defaming her reputation by saying,“ I married this woman but when I had sexual relations with her I discovered she was not a virgin!”

When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said,“ It’s a ghost!” and cried out with fear.But immediately Jesus spoke to them:“ Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”

They are absolutely terrified, even by things that do not normally cause fear. For God annihilates those who attack you. You are able to humiliate them because God has rejected them.

Manoah said to his wife,“ We will certainly die, because we have seen a supernatural being!”

Moreover, he has raised accusations of impropriety by saying,‘ I discovered your daughter was not a virgin,’ but this is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity!” The cloth must then be spread out before the city’s elders.

It was reported to the family of David,“ Syria has allied with Ephraim.” They and their people were emotionally shaken, just as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

They said to one other,“ Surely we’re being punished because of our brother, because we saw how distressed he was when he cried to us for mercy, but we refused to listen. That is why this distress has come on us!”

Now his father and mother did not realize this was the LORD’s doing, because he was looking for an opportunity to stir up trouble with the Philistines( for at that time the Philistines were ruling Israel).

He said to his brothers,“ My money was returned! Here it is in my sack!” They were dismayed; they turned trembling one to another and said,“ What in the world has God done to us?”

But when Herod heard this, he said,“ John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!”

They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash they come rolling in.

Terrifying sounds fill his ears; in a time of peace marauders attack him.

But sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of wrong desires. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
