But Jacob didn’t send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with them. He was afraid Benjamin might be harmed.

Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear.

As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked,“ Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” And he said,“ God be gracious to you, my son.”

Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her,“ Don’t despair, for you have another son.”As she breathed her last— for she was dying— she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath( that is, Bethlehem).

Then they said,“ Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

And may God Almighty grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”

“ Your servant my father said to us,‘ You know that my wife bore me two sons.One of them went away from me, and I said,“ He has surely been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.’“ So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said,‘ If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’“ Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers.How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.”

And we answered,‘ We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’“ Then you said to your servants,‘ Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’And we said to my lord,‘ The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’

And the Lord God said,“ The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
