But he said,“ My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

雅各说：“我的儿子不可跟你们去。他哥哥已经死了，现在只剩下他。要是他在路上遇到什么意外，你们会使我这白发苍苍的老人凄凄惨惨地进坟墓。”

但雅各说：“我的儿子不可与你们一同下去，因为他哥哥死了，只剩下他。如果在你们所行的路上有灾祸临到他，你们就使白发苍苍的我悲悲惨惨地下阴间去了！”

曰我之幼子、必不與爾偕行、其兄已亡、惟彼獨存、如途間遭害、則爾使我皓首慘然下陰府矣、

曰我必不使幼子與爾偕往、其兄已亡、彼即㷀然、如途間遭害、則我皓然白首、淒涼歸墓、皆爾之過也。

曰我幼子必不可與爾同往、蓋其兄已死、惟彼獨留、若在爾所行之途遇害、則爾使我皓首悲慘歸示阿勒、

But Jacob said,“ My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”

But Jacob said,“ My son will not go down there with you. His brother is dead. He’s the only one left here with me. Suppose he’s harmed on the journey you are taking. Then I would die as a sad old man.”

But Jacob replied,“ My son will not go down with you. His brother Joseph is dead, and he is all I have left. If anything should happen to him on your journey, you would send this grieving, white haired man to his grave.”

But Jacob answered,“ My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If anything happens to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hairs down to Sheol in sorrow.”

But Jacob said,“ My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should happen to him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”

But he said,“ My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is left alone. If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.”

And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left: if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

But Jacob answered,“ My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If anything happens to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hairs down to Sheol in sorrow.”

And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

But Jacob replied,“ My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If an accident happens to him on the journey you have to make, then you will bring down my gray hair in sorrow to the grave.”

He said,“ My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said,“ No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.

But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might happen to him.

And he identified it and said,“ It is my son’s robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.”

And they said,“ We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.”

Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor.And when her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her,“ Do not fear, for you have another son.”And as her soul was departing( for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.

even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.

Then your servant my father said to us,‘ You know that my wife bore me two sons.One left me, and I said,“ Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since.If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’“ Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy’s life,as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying,‘ If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.”

For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.She conceived and bore a son and said,“ God has taken away my reproach.”And she called his name Joseph, saying,“ May the Lord add to me another son!”

Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace.

I said, In the middle of my days I must depart; I am consigned to the gates of Sheol for the rest of my years.

And we said to my lord,‘ We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him.’
