But Jacob answered,“ My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If anything happens to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hairs down to Sheol in sorrow.”

曰我之幼子、必不與爾偕行、其兄已亡、惟彼獨存、如途間遭害、則爾使我皓首慘然下陰府矣、

曰我必不使幼子與爾偕往、其兄已亡、彼即㷀然、如途間遭害、則我皓然白首、淒涼歸墓、皆爾之過也。

曰我幼子必不可與爾同往、蓋其兄已死、惟彼獨留、若在爾所行之途遇害、則爾使我皓首悲慘歸示阿勒、

But Jacob said,“ My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”

But Jacob said,“ My son will not go down there with you. His brother is dead. He’s the only one left here with me. Suppose he’s harmed on the journey you are taking. Then I would die as a sad old man.”

But he said,“ My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

But Jacob replied,“ My son will not go down with you. His brother Joseph is dead, and he is all I have left. If anything should happen to him on your journey, you would send this grieving, white haired man to his grave.”

But Jacob said,“ My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should happen to him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”

But he said,“ My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is left alone. If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.”

And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left: if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

But Jacob answered,“ My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If anything happens to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hairs down to Sheol in sorrow.”

And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

But Jacob replied,“ My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If an accident happens to him on the journey you have to make, then you will bring down my gray hair in sorrow to the grave.”

He said,“ My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.“ No,” he said.“ I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” And his father wept for him.

But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he thought,“ Something might happen to him.”

His father recognized it.“ It is my son’s robe,” he said.“ A vicious animal has devoured him. Joseph has been torn to pieces!”

But they replied,“ We, your servants, were twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no longer living.”

They set out from Bethel. When they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth, and her labor was difficult.During her difficult labor, the midwife said to her,“ Don’t be afraid, for you have another son.”With her last breath— for she was dying— she named him Ben-oni, but his father called him Benjamin.

Even while I am old and gray, God, do not abandon me, while I proclaim your power to another generation, your strength to all who are to come.

Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.

I will be the same until your old age, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will bear and rescue you.

Your servant my father said to us,‘ You know that my wife bore me two sons.One is gone from me— I said he must have been torn to pieces— and I have never seen him again.If you also take this one from me and anything happens to him, you will bring my gray hairs down to Sheol in sorrow.’“ So if I come to your servant my father and the boy is not with us— his life is wrapped up with the boy’s life—when he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will have brought the gray hairs of your servant our father down to Sheol in sorrow.Your servant became accountable to my father for the boy, saying,‘ If I do not return him to you, I will always bear the guilt for sinning against you, my father.’Now please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave, in place of the boy. Let him go back with his brothers.For how can I go back to my father without the boy? I could not bear to see the grief that would overwhelm my father.”

For to the person who is pleasing in his sight, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and accumulating in order to give to the one who is pleasing in God’s sight. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

I have seen all the things that are done under the sun and have found everything to be futile, a pursuit of the wind.

Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb.She conceived and bore a son, and she said,“ God has taken away my disgrace.”She named him Joseph and said,“ May the LORD add another son to me.”

Act according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray head descend to Sheol in peace.

I said: In the prime of my life I must go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years.

and we answered my lord,‘ We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age. The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’
