Speaking among themselves, they said,“ Clearly we are being punished because of what we did to Joseph long ago. We saw his anguish when he pleaded for his life, but we wouldn’t listen. That’s why we’re in this trouble.”

他們彼此說：「我們在弟弟的事上實在有罪。他懇求我們的時候，我們見他心中苦楚，卻不肯聽，所以現在這苦楚臨到我們了。」

相語曰、昔我儕緣弟獲戾、見其苦衷、而不聽其祈求、故遭此難、

相語曰、昔吾儕因弟而獲罪、我見其乞憐、不諒其苦衷、置若罔聞、故遭此難。

眾兄弟相語曰、昔我儕因弟而獲罪、我見其苦心、雖乞憐而我不聽、故遭此難、

They said to one another,“ Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.”

They said to one another,“ God is surely punishing us because of our brother. We saw how upset he was when he begged us to let him live. But we wouldn’t listen. That’s why all this trouble has come to us.”

Then they said to one another,“ In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”

Then they said to each other,“ Obviously, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. We saw his deep distress when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this trouble has come to us.”

Then they said to one another,“ Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; for that reason this distress has happened to us.”

Then they said to one another,“ We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore this distress has come upon us.”

And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

Then they said to each other,“ Obviously, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. We saw his deep distress when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this trouble has come to us.”

And they said one to another, We[ are] verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

They said to one other,“ Surely we’re being punished because of our brother, because we saw how distressed he was when he cried to us for mercy, but we refused to listen. That is why this distress has come on us!”

They said to one another,“ We are certainly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.”

Then I will return to my place until they admit their guilt and turn to me. For as soon as trouble comes, they will earnestly search for me.”

So when Joseph arrived, his brothers ripped off the beautiful robe he was wearing.Then they grabbed him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt.Judah said to his brothers,“ What will we gain by killing our brother? We’d have to cover up the crime.Instead of hurting him, let’s sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother— our own flesh and blood!” And his brothers agreed.So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty pieces of silver. And the traders took him to Egypt.

If they are bound in chains and caught up in a web of trouble,he shows them the reason. He shows them their sins of pride.

Then David confessed to Nathan,“ I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied,“ Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.

A murderer’s tormented conscience will drive him into the grave. Don’t protect him!

“ Therefore, this is what the Lord says: Since you have not obeyed me by setting your countrymen free, I will set you free to be destroyed by war, disease, and famine. You will be an object of horror to all the nations of the earth.

For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.

Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

Many who became believers confessed their sinful practices.

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.

Your wickedness will bring its own punishment. Your turning from me will shame you. You will see what an evil, bitter thing it is to abandon the Lord your God and not to fear him. I, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!

For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.’

“ Why don’t people say to God,‘ I have sinned, but I will sin no more’?Or‘ I don’t know what evil I have done— tell me. If I have done wrong, I will stop at once’?

“ Your own actions have brought this upon you. This punishment is bitter, piercing you to the heart!”

There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.

But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the Lord, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.

Finally, the king’s chief cup bearer spoke up.“ Today I have been reminded of my failure,” he told Pharaoh.

When Judas, who had betrayed him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse. So he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the leading priests and the elders.“ I have sinned,” he declared,“ for I have betrayed an innocent man.”“ What do we care?” they retorted.“ That’s your problem.”

Then she said to Elijah,“ O man of God, what have you done to me? Have you come here to point out my sins and kill my son?”

Adoni bezek said,“ I once had seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off, eating scraps from under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They took him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to die; save them as they stagger to their death.Don’t excuse yourself by saying,“ Look, we didn’t know.” For God understands all hearts, and he sees you. He who guards your soul knows you knew. He will repay all people as their actions deserve.

‘ where the maggots never die and the fire never goes out.’

He will declare to his friends,‘ I sinned and twisted the truth, but it was not worth it.God rescued me from the grave, and now my life is filled with light.’

when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster engulfs you like a cyclone, and anguish and distress overwhelm you.“ When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.

And you have brought this upon yourselves by rebelling against the Lord your God, even though he was leading you on the way!
